Overview

The ABB YFU Flood Seal YY Type Fused Disconnect StreetLight Kit (SKU: YFU) is a rugged, outdoor-rated solution for secure electrical connections in street lighting and similar applications. Engineered for copper (#14 to #4 AWG) and aluminum (#14 to #2 AWG) conductors, this kit ensures reliable performance in exposed environments with its flood-seal design and corrosion-resistant components. The kit includes a Y-Type Insert & Housing (line side), Load End Insert with Connector, Load End Twin Cap, and Insulating Twin Rocket for strain relief and insulation. A fuse clip accommodates midget-type fuses (1 1/2 × 13/32 inches) for overcurrent protection, while 10-gauge copper wire provides internal connections. Three screws secure the assembly, and silicone grease enhances conductivity and moisture resistance. An oxide inhibitor prevents corrosion on aluminum conductors, ensuring long-term reliability. The 600V-rated kit is designed for easy installation with clear instructions, including cable preparation guidelines (e.g., stripping 1/2 inch of insulation, beveling larger cables, and applying silicone grease). The Flood Seal design minimizes water ingress, making it ideal for wet or corrosive conditions.

How to Install Flood-Seal YY-Type Disconnect Kits (YFU and YDU)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of Flood-Seal YY-Type Disconnect Kits, including both Load End and Line Side assemblies. Ensure all local, state, and national electrical codes are followed.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

1/8 inch hex wrench, Wire strippers, Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Y-Type Insert & Housing (Line Side), Connecting Link (for Disconnect Kits), Load End Insert with Connector, Load End Twin Cap, Silicone grease, Midget type fuse (1 1/2 x 13/32, if required, not included), Electrical cables (#14-6 CU or AL, #14-4 CU, #14-2 AL, #8-4, #4-1/0)

  1. Safety Warning and Cable Identification

WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules. CAUTION: Identify load side wire and assemble per instructions.

  2. Prepare Load End Housing and Cable

Select the correct cut-off ring on the Load end housing for the cable being used. Cut off the end of the housing at the tip of the arrow, leaving the correct cable size showing. Wipe the cable clean. On larger cables, bevel the end of the cable insulation for ease of installation. Apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the load end housing. Insert cables until they extend 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing.

  3. Strip and Connect Load End Wires

Strip insulation from the cable ends, baring 1/2 inch of conductor. CAUTION: Do not exceed strip length. Insert wires into the connector of the insert. Tighten screws to hold wires securely.

  4. Install Fuse/Link and Seat Load End Insert

Insert the fuse or connecting link (if applicable) into the YY Load Side assembly. Apply silicone grease as shown, then pull on the wires and/or push the insert until it is properly seated in the twin cap housing.

  5. Prepare Line Side Housing and Cable (for Run Connections)

Select the correct cut-off ring for the cable being used. Cut and pencil the cable insulation. Apply silicone grease to the end of the cable and to the cut opening of the housing. Slide the cable through until it extends 2 to 3 inches beyond the housing.

  6. Strip and Connect Line Side Wires

Bare 1/2 inch of insulation. CAUTION: Do not overstrip. Insert cables as shown in the illustration. Tighten to a minimum of 30 inch-lbs using a 1/8 inch hex wrench.

  7. Assemble and Seat Line Side Insert

Lubricate the insert with silicone grease. Slide the Y-Type housing up to the bottom of the insert. Push the insert into the opening of the housing. While pulling on the cables and holding onto the housing, slide it toward the insert. Push the insert until it is fully seated in the housing.

  8. Final Lubrication of Components

Lubricate male and female components with the supplied silicone grease to ensure a proper seal and ease of connection.
