Overview

The ABB Installation Products XJG74-EMT is a 2-1/2 inch conduit expansion coupling engineered for use with EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) in applications requiring thermal expansion and contraction compensation. This coupling provides 4 inches of axial movement, allowing it to accommodate significant linear shifts in long conduit runs caused by temperature variations or structural movement. The internal bonding jumper, constructed of tinned copper braid, ensures continuous electrical continuity across the expansion joint, maintaining system grounding integrity per NEC® Article 250.98 without requiring external grounding straps. The fitting is constructed from malleable or ductile iron with exterior and interior zinc plating for corrosion protection, ensuring raintight performance after installation. Installation is simplified with a no-disassembly design—slide the coupling onto the conduit until it stops at the internal sliding bushing, tighten the gland nut, and the fitting is ready for service. This coupling is ideal for extensive conduit layouts in industrial, commercial, or institutional facilities where thermal expansion and contraction must be managed to prevent stress on the conduit system and maintain reliable electrical pathways. The XJG74-EMT is part of the ABB Installation Products line, designed for contractors and facility managers seeking dependable performance in demanding electrical installations.

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint with Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) to accommodate longitudinal movement caused by thermal expansion and contraction.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert EMT Tubing

Insert the Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the pre-assembled XJG-EMT Expansion Joint. The gland nut comes partially tightened from the factory to allow for easy insertion of the tubing without prior disassembly.

  2. Tighten Gland Nuts

Using a pipe wrench, tighten the gland nuts at each end of the EMT connector. Refer to the Torque Chart for the correct torque specifications: 90.4 N•m (800 lbl-in) for 3/4” & Smaller, 113 N•m (1000 lbl-in) for 1”, 1-1/4”, & 1-1/2”, and 181 N•m (1600 lbl-in) for 2” & Larger. This action compresses the Teflon packing around the tubing, creating a rain-tight seal.

  3. Position Internal Bushing

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting (XJG-EMT). This allows for equal movement of the conduit in both directions, accommodating the specified 2 or 4 inches from the center in either direction.
