Overview

The ABB XJG88-EMT 3-inch Conduit Expansion Coupling is a purpose-built solution for EMT conduit systems requiring thermal expansion and contraction compensation. This coupling accommodates up to 8 inches of axial movement, ensuring continuous conduit alignment during temperature fluctuations without compromising system integrity. The integrated internal bonding jumper—constructed from tinned copper braid and sized to meet UL fault current test requirements—maintains electrical continuity across the expansion joint, eliminating the need for external grounding straps and complying with NEC® Article 250.98 bonding requirements. Manufactured from malleable or ductile iron with exterior and interior zinc plating, the XJG88-EMT provides superior corrosion resistance and raintight performance after installation. The design eliminates disassembly during installation, reducing labor time and simplifying field assembly. The internal sliding bushing (keyed) ensures proper alignment and prevents rotation, while the gland nut secures the coupling in place. Ideal for industrial facilities, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects where conduit systems must adapt to structural shifts or environmental changes. Common applications include long conduit runs in power distribution, HVAC systems, and manufacturing plants where thermal cycling is expected. The XJG series is a standard solution for expansion applications in electrical installations, ensuring long-term reliability without compromising system integrity.

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint with Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT). It covers inserting tubing, tightening the gland nut, and positioning the internal bushing for proper movement.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert EMT Tubing

Insert the Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint. The gland nut is partially tightened from the factory to facilitate easy insertion, and no disassembly of the joint is required.

  2. Tighten Gland Nut

Using a pipe wrench, tighten the gland nut at the end of the EMT connector. This will compress the Teflon packing around the tubing, providing a rain-tight seal. Refer to the Torque Chart for correct torque: 90.4 N•m (800 lbl-in) for 3/4" & smaller; 113 N•m (1000 lbl-in) for 1", 1-1/4", & 1-1/2"; 181 N•m (1600 lbl-in) for 2" & larger.

  3. Position Internal Bushing

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting (XJG-EMT) to allow for equal movement in both directions. This ensures the conduit can move either 2 or 4 inches from the center, resulting in a total movement of 4 or 8 inches.
