Overview

The ABB Installation Products XJG108-EMT is a 4-inch conduit expansion coupling engineered for EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) systems requiring axial movement compensation. This coupling accommodates up to 8 inches of linear expansion or contraction, making it ideal for installations subject to thermal cycling, vibration, or seismic activity. Constructed from malleable or ductile iron with exterior and interior zinc plating, the coupling provides corrosion protection and raintight performance after installation. Installation is simplified with a no-disassembly design—slide the fitting onto the conduit until it stops at the internal sliding bushing, tighten the gland nut, and the system is ready for operation. The internal keyed sliding bushing ensures proper alignment and prevents rotation during axial movement. This coupling is essential for long conduit runs where thermal expansion and contraction must be accommodated without stressing connections. Suitable for commercial and industrial applications, including power distribution, HVAC, and manufacturing facilities where conduit systems require flexibility and grounding integrity.
  • 4-inch conduit size for EMT systems
  • 8 inches of axial movement capacity
  • Internal bonding jumper eliminates external grounding straps
  • No disassembly required for installation
  • Zinc-plated malleable/ductile iron construction for corrosion resistance
  • Raintight performance after installation
  • Internal keyed sliding bushing for alignment and rotation prevention
  • Complies with NEC® Article 250.98 bonding requirements

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint with Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT). This joint is designed to accommodate longitudinal movement in conduit runs caused by thermal expansion and contraction, providing a continuous electrical conductor without external bonding.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert Electrical Metallic Tubing

Ensure the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint is pre-assembled, as no disassembly is required. The gland nut comes partially tightened from the factory to facilitate easy insertion. Insert the prepared Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the expansion joint fitting.

  2. Secure the Gland Nut

Using a pipe wrench, firmly tighten the gland nut at the end of the EMT connector. Refer to the Torque Chart for correct torque specifications: for 3/4” (21) & Smaller, apply 90.4 N•m (800 lbl-in); for 1”, 1-1/4”, & 1-1/2” (27, 35 & 41), apply 113 N•m (1000 lbl-in); and for 2” (53) & Larger, apply 181 N•m (1600 lbl-in). This action will compress the Teflon packing, creating a rain-tight seal around the tubing.

  3. Center the Internal Bushing

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting (XJG-EMT). This crucial step ensures that the conduit can move equally in both directions, allowing for the specified 2 or 4 inches of movement from the center, totaling 4 or 8 inches of overall movement.
