Overview

The ABB Installation Products XJG78-EMT is a 2-1/2 inch conduit expansion coupling engineered for use with EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) systems. This coupling provides up to 8 inches of axial movement to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction in long conduit runs, preventing stress on conduit and connected equipment. Its integrated internal bonding jumper—constructed of tinned copper braid—ensures continuous electrical conductivity across the expansion joint without requiring external grounding straps, meeting NEC® Article 250.98 bonding requirements. The fitting is constructed from malleable or ductile iron with exterior and interior zinc plating for corrosion resistance and is raintight after installation. Installation is simplified with no disassembly required; slide the coupling onto the conduit until it stops at the internal sliding bushing, then tighten the gland nut for a secure, tamper-resistant connection. The internal sliding bushing (keyed) maintains alignment while allowing linear movement. This coupling is ideal for industrial facilities, large commercial buildings, or outdoor installations where conduit systems experience significant temperature fluctuations. The 2-1/2 inch size accommodates standard EMT conduit installations requiring substantial axial displacement. SKU: XJG78-EMT.

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint with Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT). The joint is designed to accommodate longitudinal movement in conduit runs and comes pre-assembled, requiring no disassembly.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

Insert one section of Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the pre-assembled XJG-EMT Expansion Joint. The gland nut comes partially tightened from the factory to facilitate easy insertion of the tubing.

  2. Tighten the Gland Nut

    Using a pipe wrench, tighten the gland nut at the end of the EMT connector. This action will compress the Teflon packing around the tubing, creating a rain-tight seal. Refer to the Torque Chart for correct torque values: 3/4" (21) & Smaller: 90.4 N•m (800 lbl-in); 1", 1-1/4", & 1-1/2" (27, 35 & 41): 113 N•m (1000 lbl-in); 2" (53) & Larger: 181 N•m (1600 lbl-in).

  3. Position the Internal Bushing

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting. This ensures that the conduit can move equally in both directions, allowing for proper thermal expansion and contraction.
