How to Install the USK 4/0 SL Flood-Seal Mechanical Splice Kit

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the USK 4/0 SL Flood-Seal Mechanical Splice Kit, ensuring a secure and insulated connection for electrical cables. WARNING: Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules to prevent electric shock.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Utility knife

Supplies needed:

USK 4/0 SL Mechanical Splice Kit, Silicone grease, Electrical cables, Electrical connector

  1. Select Cut-off Ring

Identify the appropriate cut-off ring on the rocket sleeve and cap based on the specific cable size being used for the splice. Refer to the provided cable size chart for guidance.

  2. Prepare Rocket Sleeve and Cap

Using a suitable cable cutting tool, cut the rocket sleeve and cap at the tip of the arrow that corresponds to the selected cable size. Ensure the correct cable size indication remains visible on the opened rocket and cap.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip approximately 1-1/2 inches of insulation from the end of the electrical cable to expose the conductor. This prepares the cable for the installation of the electrical connector.

  4. Clean and Bevel Cable End

Wipe the stripped cable conductor and insulation clean to remove any debris or contaminants. Bevel the end of the cable insulation slightly to facilitate easier installation into the splice kit components.

  5. Install Electrical Connector

Install the appropriate electrical connector onto the stripped conductor. Ensure the connector is securely fastened by applying the correct torque: 120 in./lbs. (10 ft.-lbs.) for #6 to #4 wire size, and 240 in./lbs. (20 ft.-lbs.) for #2 to 350 MCM.

  6. Apply Silicone and Slide Sleeve

Apply a generous amount of silicone grease to the end of the prepared cable and to the cut opening of the insulating sleeve (rocket and cap). Carefully slide the cut rocket sleeve and cap over the prepared cable, ensuring it fully covers the installed connector.

  7. Seal and Assemble Splice

Apply additional silicone to the open edge of the rocket sleeve. Center the installed electrical connector precisely between the two halves of the 'Flood-Seal' EPDM cover. Firmly slide the two covers together until they are fully sealed, creating a watertight and insulated splice.
