TBM6S
Crimp Tool with Shure Stake Mechanism, Crimps #8-500MCM Cu, #10-350MCM Al Connectors, 54705-54750 C-TapsHow to Operate the TBM6 and TBM6S Compression Tools
This guide provides instructions for installing dies, preparing conductors, and making reliable compressions using the TBM6 and TBM6S compression tools with Thomas & Betts connectors.
Tools needed:
TBM6 Compression Tool, TBM6S Compression Tool, Appropriate Dies (Color-Keyed or Sta-Kon), Wire brush (for aluminum cable), Emery cloth (for aluminum cable)
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts Connectors (Sta-Kon or Color-Keyed), Conductors (Copper or Aluminum), Joint compound (for aluminum cable)
- Install or Change Dies
Open the tool handles until fully extended. To remove, pull the locking pin down to disengage it from the lower die, then slip the lower die out. Pull the upper die from under the die retaining spring. To install, insert the upper die first under the die retaining spring with the desired crimping nest facing the ram. Then, insert the lower die with the rib down and the locking pin notch to the right, slipping it into the groove in the ram until the locking pin snaps into the notch.
- Prepare the Conductor
Strip the insulation from the conductor without cutting or nicking the strands. Refer to the instruction sheet supplied with your specific connectors for the correct strip length. For aluminum cable, apply a thin layer of joint compound onto the conductor strands and brush it in between the strands using a wire brush or emery cloth.
- Make a Compression
Insert the prepared conductor fully into the connector. For Color-Keyed® connectors, position the connector in the die grooves so the die is between the color code marks for copper, or on the color code marks for aluminum. For Sta-Kon® terminals, center the die over the barrel of the terminal. Refer to the connector's instruction sheet to determine the required number of compressions. Close the tool handles completely for each compression. WARNING: Pinch point hazard. Keep all body parts away from moving parts of the tool during operation. For TBM6S tools, if the Shure Stake® mechanism needs to be released before crimp completion, slightly squeeze handles and push the dowel pin to disengage the ratchet.
