How to Operate and Maintain the TBM5-SV Compression Tool
This guide provides instructions for operating the TBM5-SV compression tool, covering die installation, conductor preparation, making compressions, and performing essential calibration verification procedures.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Emery cloth, Gage pin set, Screwdriver
Supplies needed:
Thomas & Betts connectors, Copper conductors, Aluminum conductors, Joint compound
- Install the Correct Die
Open the tool handles until fully extended. If a die is present, pull it out from under the die retaining spring. Hold the new die with the desired crimping nest and color code in the lower right corner. Insert the die under the die retaining spring in the tool head. Ensure the die locator pin is held by pressure. Match the color on the connector to the color on the die. Keep fingers clear of die nests when handles are brought together.
- Prepare the Conductor
Strip insulation properly without cutting or nicking the conductor strands, referring to the connector's instruction sheet for strip length. For aluminum conductors, smear a thin layer of joint compound onto the conductor and brush it in with a wire brush or emery cloth. Caution: Improper stripping can lead to premature pull-test failures.
- Make a Compression
Insert the prepared conductor into the connector until it bottoms out. Locate the connector in the tool's die grooves so the die is between the color code marks for copper and on the color code marks for aluminum. If multiple compressions are required, start nearest the tongue of a terminal or center of a splice, then work progressively toward the barrel end. Close the tool handles completely for each compression until the SHURE STAKE® mechanism releases.
- Perform Visual Inspection
Inspect the tool for cracks, sharp edges, and other obvious imperfections that may affect performance. Ensure the die nest area is free of burrs, dents, or scratches. This check should be performed whenever damage is suspected or operating conditions warrant.
- Check and Adjust Handle Spread
Insert a die. Lay the tool on a flat surface, open Handle A, and allow it to close under its own weight; the ram should touch the die. Measure the distance between the handle grips. It should be between 11” and 14”. If adjustment is needed, loosen the lockscrew. Turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase distance or counterclockwise to decrease it. Tighten the lockscrew and recheck the handle distance.
- Perform Gaging Procedure
Wipe dies clean before gaging. Squeeze the handles until the jaws are fully closed. Select a gage pin that can be inserted into the die nest with minimal hand pressure. Verify that the gage pin falls between the minimum and maximum limits specified in the Gaging Table (Section 3.4 of the manual) for the specific die color and category number.
