What cable sizes can the TBM4S crimp?
The TBM4S crimps copper cables from 8 to 250 kcmil and aluminum cables from 8 AWG to 4/0.
Can the TBM4S be used for both copper and aluminum connectors?
Yes, the TBM4S is compatible with both copper and aluminum lugs, splices, and C-Tap connectors within its specified ranges.
Does the TBM4S require dies for different connector sizes?
No, the TBM4S features a dieless adjustable crimping mechanism that accommodates various connector sizes without specialized dies.
What safety precautions should be taken with the TBM4S?
Handles are non-insulating; do not crimp on energized wires. Keep body parts clear of the die nest during operation.
What is the Shure-Stake® mechanism?
The Shure-Stake® ratchet ensures a complete crimp cycle by releasing only after the full stroke is completed, preventing partial crimps.
Is the TBM4S suitable for insulated connectors?
The TBM4S is designed for non-insulated lugs, splices, and C-Tap type connectors.
How do I adjust the TBM4S for different cable sizes?
Turn the adjusting wheel until the pointer slot aligns with the selected cable size line. The wheel should be in a positive detented position.
What is the handle spread adjustment for the TBM4S?
The handle spread should measure 14 inches ±1/2 inch when the tool is properly adjusted.
How to Operate and Maintain the TBM4S Adjustable Crimper
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for crimping copper and aluminum cables using the TBM4S adjustable crimper, along with procedures for gauging the crimping area and adjusting the handle spread. WARNING: Handles are non-insulating. Do not crimp on energized wires.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
TBM4S Adjustable Crimper, Pin gauge (0.405" ± 0.010" and 0.350" ± 0.010"), Measuring tape or ruler
Supplies needed:
Copper cables (8 GA to 250 MCM), Aluminum cables (8 GA to 3/0), Connectors suitable for cable type
- Prepare the Cable
Strip the cable without cutting or nicking the strands to expose the conductor.
- Select Tool Side
Choose the appropriate side of the tool (copper or aluminum) according to the type of connector and cable combination you are installing.
- Adjust Indenter for Cable Size
Move the indenter by turning the adjusting wheel until the pointer slot aligns with the selected cable size line. Ensure the wheel is in a positive detented position as shown in Figure 1 of the documentation.
- Insert Cable into Connector
Insert the stripped cable into the connector barrel until it bottoms out.
- Position Connector in Tool
Locate the connector in the tool between the die nest and the indenter as shown in Figure 2 of the documentation. WARNING: Keep fingers and other body parts clear of the die nest during operation of this tool.
- Crimp Connector
Crimp the connector by closing the handles. Apply as many crimps as required; refer to the instructions packed with your specific connectors for the required number of crimps.
- Check Handle Adjustment (Optional)
Lay the tool on a flat surface, open the handle, and release it so that it closes under its own weight. Measure the handle spread distance at the inner surface of the handle tips as shown in Figure 3.
- Verify Handle Spread
Confirm that the measured handle spread distance is 14 inches ± 1/2 inch. If the distance is not within this range, the tool requires adjustment.
- Adjust Handle Spread (If Needed)
Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase the handle spread or counterclockwise to decrease it until the handle spread measures 14 inches ± 1/2 inch.
- Prepare for Gauging
Close the tool jaws until they bottom.
- Select Tool Side for Gauging
Choose the side of the tool to be gauged (for copper or aluminum cables).
- Set Indenter for Gauging
Move the indenter until the pointer slot aligns with the selected cable size. For copper cables, select 2/0. For aluminum cables, select 2 GA. Ensure the adjusting wheel is in a positive detented position.
- Gauge Crimping Area
Gauge the crimping area with a suitable pin gauge. The gauge diameter must fall within 0.405 inches ± 0.010 inches for 2/0 copper cables and 0.350 inches ± 0.010 inches for 2 GA aluminum cables.
