How to Install STEX300 Cable Fittings with Liquid Sealant

Comprehensive guide for installing STEX300 Star Teck™ extreme cable fittings, including cable preparation, gland nut tightening, and application of SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound for hazardous locations. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 4h 10m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Wrench (for gland nut), Damp cloth, Gloves

Supplies needed:

STEX300 Cable Fitting, Cable (compatible with STEX300), SC4-KIT-1 Liquid Sealing Compound, Fiber Damming Material

  1. De-energize Circuits

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before beginning installation or maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized to prevent electrical shock. This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

  2. Prepare Cable Working Length

Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation during this process.

  3. Trim Outer Jacket and Check Armor Stop

Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table for your specific STEX300 fitting. Test the inner conductor bundle by inserting the conductor ends into the armor stop opening. If the inner conductor bundle will not pass through, unscrew and discard the Armor Stop.

  4. Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the Armor Stop (if present). Tighten the gland nut until you obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque specified in the table (e.g., 1600 in-lbs for STEX300). Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal.

  5. Disassemble Fitting and Trim Inner Jacket

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. If the removable armor stop was not removed in Step 3, unscrew and discard it now. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. (For shielded data cables, refer to Section 2 of the original document for additional preparation steps).

  6. Prepare and Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)

CAUTION: For hazardous locations, this fitting must be assembled with SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT. Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body, spreading strands of uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 sealing compound following its package instructions. For STEX300 fittings, fill approximately HALF of the sealing chamber, wait 2 hours, then fill the rest of the sealing chamber to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners that may damage the flame path.

  7. Mount Hub and Secure Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour from the final fill), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
