How to Install STEX200 Star Teck Extreme Cable Fittings

This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing cables, assembling the STEX200 fitting, and applying the appropriate sealing compound for a secure and safe installation in hazardous locations.

Estimated time: 2h 30m

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Damp cloth, Wooden dowel (for putty sealant), Gloves (for putty sealant), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Supplies needed:

STEX200 Star Teck Extreme Cable Fitting, Cable (compatible with STEX200), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (purchased separately), SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (purchased separately), Fiber damming material (for liquid sealant)

  1. De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable Armor

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to expose an armor strip length of 1-3/4 inches, as indicated in the table for STEX200.

  2. Assemble Gland Nut and Secure Cable

Test the inner conductor bundle by inserting conductor ends into the armor stop opening. If the inner conductor bundle will not pass through the Armor Stop, unscrew and discard the Armor Stop. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the Armor Stop (if present). Tighten the gland nut to a maximum torque of 1600 IN-LBS, or until you obtain an appropriate seal. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal.

  3. Disassemble Fitting and Prepare Conductors

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. If the Removable Armor Stop was not removed in Step 2, unscrew and discard it now. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields, and then remove any filler materials without disturbing inner shields.

  4. Apply Sealing Compound

CAUTION: For hazardous locations, these fittings must be assembled with either SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (purchased separately). Choose one method based on your cable type and requirements. METHOD A: Using Liquid-Type Sealing Compound SC4-KIT-1 (Suitable for all power and shielded data cables): Pack fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and body, spreading strands of uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats. Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the sealing compound following instructions provided on its package. Dispense the compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes and fills to the top for STEX200 fittings. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth; do not use abrasive cleaners. Allow approximately 1 hour for the compound to solidify. METHOD B: Using Putty-Type Sealing Compound SC65 (Do not use for shielded cables or cables with 5 or more conductors including ground): WARNING: Wear gloves provided and other proper PPE. In case of contact with skin or eyes, flush thoroughly. CAUTION: For optimal seal, install compound at 70°F (21°C) or above; below this, it will be less pliable. Ensure voids are filled. Spread insulated conductors slightly and uninsulated grounding conductor strands. Thoroughly mix the two parts of sealing compound until uniform blue color (usable life 30 minutes at 70°F). Apply a small portion of compound in the middle of insulated conductors and between grounding conductor strands. Bring conductors together and apply compound all around, building a plug approximately equal to the sealing chamber's small inside diameter and length. Slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound, then screw it to the body sub-assembly until it seats. Remove any excess compound. Fill the throat area of the sealing chamber with compound, using a suitable wooden dowel to pack it tightly around conductors. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth; do not use abrasive cleaners. Allow approximately 1 hour for the compound to set before disturbing conductors.

  5. Complete Final Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound is solidified (for liquid type) or set (for putty type), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub. Secure the assembly in position by tightening the union until it bottoms, ensuring metal-to-metal contact. If using putty compound, repack it tightly around conductors if required.
