This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing STEX250 Star Teck™ extreme cable fittings, including cable preparation, assembly, and sealing with either liquid or putty compound. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wooden dowel (for putty sealant application)
Supplies needed:
STEX250 cable fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (3 units), SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (5 units), Fiber damming material (for liquid sealant), Gloves and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Damp cloth
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before beginning, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Trim Outer Jacket and Test Armor Stop
Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor for a length of 1-3/4 inches, as specified for the STEX250 fitting. Test the inner conductor bundle by inserting the conductor ends into the armor stop opening. If the inner conductor bundle will not pass through the Armor Stop, unscrew and discard the Armor Stop.
- Feed Cable and Tighten Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor firmly hits the Armor Stop. Tighten the gland nut to a maximum torque of 1600 in-lbs or until an appropriate seal is obtained. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face. Verify the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.
- Disassemble Fitting and Prepare Conductors
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. If the Removable Armor Stop was not removed in Step 2, unscrew and discard it now. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle.
- Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
If using SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (suitable for all power and shielded data cables): Pack fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body, spreading strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats. Position the cable/fitting vertically. Mix the liquid sealing compound following instructions provided on the compound package. Dispense the compound into the end of the sealing chamber, filling it to the top for STEX250. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Apply Putty Sealing Compound (SC65)
If using SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (do not use for shielded cables or cables with 5 or more conductors including ground): Spread insulated conductors slightly and spread strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable. Thoroughly mix the two parts of the sealing compound until the resulting mixture is one uniform blue color without any streaks. Usable life, after mixing, is 30 minutes at 70°F (21°C). WARNING: Wear gloves and other proper PPE. Apply a small portion of putty in the middle of insulated conductors and between individual strands of the uninsulated grounding conductor. Bring conductors back together and apply compound all around to form a plug, approximately equal to the sealing chamber's smallest inside diameter and length. Slide the sealing chamber onto the cable and compound, then screw it to the body sub-assembly until it completely seats. Remove any excess compound. Fill the throat area of the sealing chamber with compound, packing it tightly around conductors using a suitable wooden dowel. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in the desired location. If using liquid sealant, wait approximately 1 hour for the compound to solidify. If using putty sealant, allow approximately 1 hour for the compound to set before disturbing conductors. Place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact). If using putty, repack compound tightly around conductors if required.
