How to Install Star Teck Extreme STE Cable Fittings
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Star Teck Extreme STE series cable fittings, ensuring a secure and sealed connection. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Screwdriver, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Star Teck Extreme STE Cable Fitting, Armored Cable
- Disconnect Power and Select Fitting
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect all power to the enclosure or device before beginning installation. Select the appropriate Star Teck Extreme STE cable fitting (e.g., STE250S) that matches both the enclosure and the cable being used.
- Prepare Cable Armor
Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Carefully remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor. Using a hacksaw, cut the armor and trim the outer jacket to achieve the exposed armor strip length specified in the provided table (Figure 1). CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Prepare Cable Strip Length
Ensure the cable's strip length, which is the length of the exposed conductors beyond the armor, is equal to the length of the glandnut. Refer to the provided table (Figure 2) for the appropriate strip length for your specific fitting and cable.
- Insert Cable into Fitting
Feed the prepared cable through the gland funnel entry of the fitting. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the internal armor stop (Figure 3). Mispositioned cable armor may result in improper cable armor grounding, so ensure correct seating. If the inner conductor bundle does not pass through, proceed to the next step to remove the armor stop, then repeat this step.
- (Conditional) Remove Armor Stop
If the inner conductor bundle cannot pass through the fitting due to the armor stop, unscrew and discard the armor stop (Figure 6). Once removed, re-attempt to feed the cable through the gland funnel entry as described in Step 4.
- Tighten Gland Nut for Seal
Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is achieved or to the maximum torque specified in the table (Figure 4). Verify that the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable's outer jacket and are flush with the glandnut face (Figure 5). Ensure the cable remains centered within the fitting to obtain an optimal and secure seal.
