How to Install Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fittings
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, including cable preparation, boot cutting, and final tightening to ensure a proper seal for armored cables.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Strap wrenches, Hacksaw, Wire pulling lubricant (e.g., Cat. No. 15-236)
Supplies needed:
Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting (appropriate model), Armored cable, Enclosure
- Select the Appropriate Fitting
Choose the correct Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting model that is compatible with both your specific enclosure and the armored cable you intend to use. Refer to the product assembly and table for proper selection.
- Prepare the Cable Armor
Determine the required working length of the cable. Carefully remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor. Use a hacksaw to cut the exposed armor to the desired length, then trim the outer jacket to achieve the exposed armor strip length specified in the product table (refer to Figures 1 and 2 in the documentation).
- Cut the Cable Boot
Determine the precise location to cut the cable boot. You can use Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body, force the square-cut cable into the boot, and then cut the boot directly in front of the cable end (Figure 3A). Alternatively, use Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor, then progressively cut thin slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor (Figure 3B). CAUTION: Do not over-strip the boot; ensure there are no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket after cutting.
- Insert Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared armored cable through the opening of the gland nut. Push the cable firmly until the cable armor makes contact with the internal end stop of the fitting (refer to Figure 4 in the documentation).
- Tighten the Gland Nut
Tighten the gland nut using strap wrenches until an appropriate seal is achieved or the maximum torque specified in the product table is reached (refer to Figure 5 in the documentation). Verify that the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and that the cable remains centered within the fitting to ensure an optimal and secure seal. WARNING: Disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: This product must be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with all national and local electrical codes.
