How to Install the STX075-466PVC Star Teck Cable Fitting
Complete installation guide for preparing, wiring, and sealing the STX075-466PVC Star Teck PVC cable fitting for power or shielded data cables, primarily using liquid sealing compound.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches
Supplies needed:
SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Lubricant
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor. Cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Trim Outer Jacket and Prepare Cable Boot
Trim the outer jacket to expose the armor strip length as indicated in the product table for STX075-466PVC (0.725-0.905 inches). To determine where to cut the cable boot: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the body, force the square-cut cable into the boot, and cut the boot in front of the cable. Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor, then progressively cut slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the armor.
- Assemble Cable to Gland Nut and Tighten
Apply lubricant where indicated prior to screwing the gland nut. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque of 1000 IN-LBS for STX075-466PVC. Use strap wrenches for PVC coated fittings. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and the cable remains centered to obtain an optimal seal.
- Disassemble for Sealing Chamber Access and Prepare Conductors
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. For power cables, trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8”-3/8” and expose the conductor bundle. For shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle and remove filler materials, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields.
- Apply Liquid Sealing Compound (SC4-KIT-1)
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body, and spread strands of uninsulated grounding conductor where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats on the body. Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following instructions provided on its package. Dispense the compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Allow the liquid sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Mount the hub in the desired location. Place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
