Overview

The ABB Star Teck hazardous location cable fitting, SKU STX200-472, is a Teck cable fitting designed for secure installations in explosive atmospheres. Engineered for aluminum jacketed cable with a jacket diameter range of 1.700 to 1.965 inches, this fitting features a 2-inch NPT hub for connection to electrical enclosures and equipment. Its integral sealing chamber simplifies filling, while the disconnectable construction reduces cable preparation time, streamlining installation in hazardous locations. The fitting includes a stainless steel retaining ring for corrosion resistance and non-magnetic performance, ensuring dependable service in corrosive environments. A Power-Grip grounding ring provides 360° long-term grounding with immediate contact to the cable. The tapered bushing design eliminates cupping or water ingress in vertical installations, maintaining a watertight seal. The low-profile gland nut accommodates tight spaces, featuring screwdriver grooves and wrench flats for tool-free installation. The reusable gland nut includes a funnel entry for easy cable insertion. The fitting is suitable for hazardous locations including Class 1 Div. 2, Class II Div. 2, and Class III environments. The body and gland nut are constructed from aluminum, with the gland nut designed for durability and reusability. This fitting is part of the Star Teck XP series, replacing older cement-based sealing methods with dedicated liquid and putty sealants for improved reliability.

How to Install the STX200-472 Star Teck Cable Fitting

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the STX200-472 Star Teck fitting, and sealing it with liquid-type compound for hazardous locations. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Screwdriver, Damp cloth, Gloves

Supplies needed:

STX200-472 Cable Fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (2 units), Fiber damming material, Cable

  1. De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Determine the working length of conductors required inside the enclosure or device. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.

  2. Trim Outer Jacket and Feed Cable

Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length to between 1.700 and 1.965 inches, as indicated in the table for the STX200-472. Feed the cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the end stop.

  3. Tighten Gland Nut and Disassemble Fitting

Tighten the gland nut until you obtain an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque of 1600 in-lbs. Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal. Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union, then unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.

  4. Prepare Conductors

Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8” to 3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. If using shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield from the conductor bundle, taking care not to nick or damage inner shields, and remove filler materials without disturbing inner shields.

  5. Pack Damming Material and Reassemble Sealing Chamber

Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and the body. Spread strands of uninsulated grounding conductor, where applicable. Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it completely seats on the body.

  6. Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealing Compound

Position the cable/fitting into a vertical position. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following instructions provided on the compound package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level of compound stabilizes and fills to the top. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside of the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sand paper, steel wool, or wire brush that may damage the flame path.

  7. Mount Hub and Secure Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. When the sealing compound is solidified (after approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact).
