How to Install a Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting (ST050-466PVC)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Star Teck™ PVC cable fittings, including cable preparation, boot trimming, and final sealing. Ensure compliance with electrical codes and safety warnings, as installation should be performed by a qualified electrician.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Strap wrenches, Cable knife
Supplies needed:
Star Teck™ PVC Cable Fitting (ST050-466PVC), Armored Cable, Wire pulling lubricant (cat. 15-236)
- Select the Correct Fitting
Choose the appropriate Star Teck™ PVC cable fitting (e.g., ST050-466PVC) that accommodates your enclosure and cable specifications. Refer to the product table in the documentation for compatibility based on cable armor and jacket ranges.
- Prepare the Cable Armor
WARNING: Disconnect power before installation to prevent risk of shock. Determine the required working length of the cable. Remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor. Using a hacksaw, cut the armor to a strip length between 0.715 and 0.905 inches, as indicated in the product table (refer to Figures 1 and 2 in the documentation). Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length.
- Trim the Cable Boot
Prepare the cable boot for a snug fit. You can use one of two methods: Method 1: Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Force the square-cut cable into the boot and cut the boot directly in front of the cable end (Figure 3A). Method 2: Strip the cable jacket off the armor. Progressively cut thin slices off the boot until the opening can snugly slide onto the cable armor (Figure 3B). CAUTION: Do not over strip the boot; there should be no gaps between the boot and the cable jacket.
- Insert Cable into Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the opening of the gland nut. Push the cable until its armor firmly hits the internal end stop of the fitting (Figure 4). Consider using wire pulling lubricant (cat. number 15-236) for easier installation.
- Tighten and Seal the Gland Nut
Tighten the gland nut using strap wrenches until an appropriate seal is achieved, or to the maximum torque of 600 in-lbs (refer to the product table for ST050-466PVC). Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal, watertight seal (Figure 5).
