Overview

The ABB SHC 4 Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector is a high-integrity, aluminum-based termination solution designed for secure and sealed electrical connections in industrial and utility applications. This 7-inch-long connector features four outlets, enabling efficient distribution from a single feeder point while maintaining environmental protection. The dual-rated construction accommodates a broad cable range (feeder outlet S/L 6-350), supporting conductor sizes from #14 AWG to 350 kcmil, making it versatile for both service and feed cable applications. The PVC insulation ensures electrical protection and durability, while the Flood-Seal® mechanical design prevents environmental ingress, including moisture and contaminants. The streetlight (S/L) option expands its utility for specialized lighting infrastructure projects. Engineered for reliability, the SHC 4 is ideal for installations where dependable connectivity and long-term performance are critical, such as street lighting, utility distribution, and industrial power systems. How to Install Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 3-8 Series

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Mechanical Connectors, SHC 3 through SHC 8 series, including cable preparation, conductor insertion, and secure tightening.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16 inch allen wrench (alternative), 3/8 inch drive ratchet with allen adapter (alternative)

Supplies needed:

Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3 thru SHC 8 Series), Service cable or Feed cable, Silicone grease (included with connector), Compound (for conductor strands)

  1. Observe Safety Precautions

WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation of this product must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.

  2. Identify Cable Size and Prepare Rocket/Cap Ring

Identify the specific cable size you are using. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 as indicated in the product documentation. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 as indicated. Ensure you cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to expose the correct wire range for your cable.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, exposing the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended for a smoother transition, but not strictly required.

  4. Prepare Bare Conductor

Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to remove any surface oxides. Apply the provided compound and brush it into the conductor strands to ensure optimal conductivity.

  5. Apply Grease and Slide Rocket

Wipe the prepared cable clean. Apply the silicone grease (included in each rocket) and carefully slide the pre-cut rocket over the prepared cable end.

  6. Insert Conductor into Outlet

Insert the prepared conductor into the connector's outlet. Ensure a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is visible after insertion to maintain proper insulation and connection.

  7. Position Rocket Sleeve

Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar, ensuring a secure fit.

  8. Tighten Setscrews to Specified Torque

Tighten the setscrews onto the conductor using a torque wrench to the specified torque: 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs) for #12 to #2 wire sizes, and 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs) for 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire sizes. If a torque wrench is unavailable, use a 5/16” allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a “T” handle wrench or 1/2” drive, as these are not recommended for proper torque application.
