This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of Thomas & Betts 'Flood-Seal' Mechanical Connectors, SHC 3 through SHC 8 Series. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16 inch allen wrench, 3/8 inch drive ratchet with allen adapter
Supplies needed:
SHC 3830 connector rocket (for feed cable), CS4197 connector rocket (for service cable), Electrical cable (feed or service), Silicone grease (included with rocket), Electrical compound
- Prepare the Connector Rocket
Identify the specific cable size you are using. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 connector rocket as indicated. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 connector rocket as shown. Ensure you cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to expose the correct wire range for your cable size.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, exposing the conductor. While not strictly required, penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended for a smoother transition.
- Clean and Apply Compound to Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to remove any surface oxides. After brushing, apply electrical compound and brush it into the conductor strands.
- Lubricate Cable and Install Rocket
Wipe the prepared cable clean. Apply the included silicone grease to the cable, then carefully slide the pre-cut connector rocket over the lubricated cable.
- Insert Conductor
Insert the prepared conductor into the connector outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is visible after insertion.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the connector outlet and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Torque Setscrews
Tighten the setscrews onto the conductor to the specified torque. For wire sizes #12 to #2, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For wire sizes 1/0 to 350 Kcmil, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended. If unavailable, use a 5/16” allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2” drive.
