Overview

The ABB SHC 5 Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector is a high-strength, high-conductivity aluminum alloy connector engineered for reliable electrical terminations in demanding industrial and outdoor applications. Constructed from 6061-T6 aluminum with tin-plated screws and a high-performance TPE compound insulation, this dual-rated connector accommodates both copper and aluminum conductors within a cable range of #12 AWG solid through 350 kcmil. The SHC 5 features five outlet ports and measures 8-7/8 inches in length, providing versatile connectivity for feeder outlets and lighting circuits. Its integrated Streetlight (S/L) option simplifies installation for lighting control points, making it ideal for URD direct burial, below-grade boxes, above-grade pedestals, and streetlight taps. The connector is 100% hi-pot tested at 4000 V for 60 seconds to ensure safety and performance, with a voltage rating of 600 V and an operating temperature range from -40°F to 194°F (-40°C to 90°C). The PVC insulation enhances durability and environmental resistance, while the flood-seal design provides protection against moisture and contaminants. This robust solution is designed for efficient, secure terminations in power distribution and lighting systems where dependable connectivity is critical.

How to Install the Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 3 thru SHC 8 Series

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of Thomas & Betts Flood-Seal Mechanical Connectors (SHC 3-8 series), ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection. WARNING: Installation must be performed by trained installers following all applicable electrical codes and safety rules.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, 5/16" Allen wrench, 3/8" drive ratchet with Allen adapter, Wire brush, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

SHC 3830 connector (for feed cable), CS4197 connector (for service cable), Silicone grease, Electrical compound, Electrical cable (conductor)

  1. Prepare the Connector for Cable Size

Identify the specific cable size you will be using. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 as indicated in the diagram. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 as indicated. Ensure you cut the rocket/cap ring at the arrow tip to expose the correct wire range for your cable.

  2. Prepare Cable Conductor

Carefully strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable, exposing the conductor. For best results, it is recommended to pencil the edge of the insulation, though not strictly required.

  3. Clean and Treat Conductor

Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to remove any surface oxides. After cleaning, add the provided compound and brush it into the conductor strands.

  4. Lubricate and Position Rocket

Wipe the prepared cable clean. Apply the silicone grease, which is included with each rocket, and then carefully slide the pre-cut rocket over the prepared cable.

  5. Insert Conductor

Insert the prepared conductor into the connector's outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is visible after insertion.

  6. Secure Rocket Sleeve

Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.

  7. Torque Setscrews

Tighten the setscrews onto the conductor to the specified torque. For #12 to #2 wire sizes, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs) of torque. For 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire sizes, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs) of torque. A torque wrench is highly recommended. If unavailable, use a 5/16” allen wrench or a 3/8” drive ratchet with an allen adapter; avoid using a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2” drive.
