How to Install Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 3-8 Series
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 3 through SHC 8 series, ensuring a secure and properly sealed electrical connection. WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable codes and safety rules.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench, 5/16 inch Allen wrench, 3/8 inch drive ratchet with Allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector (SHC 3-8 Series), Silicone grease, Electrical compound, Electrical cable/conductor
- Prepare the Connector Rocket
Identify the cable size being used. For the feed cable, cut the SHC 3830 rocket as shown in the product documentation. For the service cable, cut the CS4197 rocket as shown. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to leave the correct wire range showing.
- Prepare the Cable Conductor
Strip approximately 2-1/4 inches of insulation from the cable conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended for optimal results, but it is not strictly required.
- Clean and Treat the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up and remove any surface oxides. After brushing, add electrical compound and brush it into the conductor strands to ensure good conductivity.
- Apply Grease and Install Rocket
Wipe the prepared cable clean. Apply the silicone grease, which is included with each rocket, to the cable. Then, slide the pre-cut Flood-Seal rocket over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor
Carefully insert the prepared conductor into the connector outlet. Ensure that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing beyond the outlet.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder of the connector. Continue sliding until the rocket firmly butts against the connector bar.
- Torque Setscrews
Tighten the setscrews down onto the conductor to the specified torque. For #12 to #2 wire, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is recommended. If unavailable, use a 5/16-inch allen wrench or a 3/8-inch drive ratchet with an allen adapter; do not use a “T” handle wrench or 1/2-inch drive.
