How to Install RAB 350 Series Electrical Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing RAB 350 Series electrical connectors. It covers preparing the connector, stripping the cable, and torquing the connection to ensure a secure and compliant installation.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Insulating gloves (rated to appropriate voltage)
Supplies needed:
RAB 350 Series connector, Electrical cable (#12 to 350 kcmil)
- Prepare the Rocket Insert
If installing #12 to 250 kcmil cable, cut the rocket insert at the marked ring. For 300/350 kcmil cable, the rocket is not required and should be removed. Reinsert the rocket if it was cut and is needed for your cable size.
- Strip the Cable
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Wear insulating gloves rated to the appropriate voltage when working on live conductors. Do not install tap conductors under load. Measure the required strip length by aligning the cable with the markings on the connector's tower. Using wire strippers, carefully strip the cable to the measured length. Ensure the cable size is appropriate; if reinstalling, it must be the same size or larger than the one removed.
- Insert the Conductor
Insert the stripped cable conductor into the appropriate opening: use the tower for 300 to 350 kcmil cables, or the rocket for #12 to 250 kcmil cables. Push the conductor until its end touches the internal window.
- Access the Torque Screw
Locate the screw plug and remove it by pulling its tether. This action will expose the internal torque screw for the connection.
- Torque the Connector
Using a torque wrench, tighten the connector screw to the values specified on the tether. Apply 120 in-lb for #12 to #3 cables. For #2 to 350 kcmil cables, apply 240 in-lb. The acceptable torque range for 2-350 kcmil is 240-350 in-lb. Ensure the connection is firm and secure. Follow standard safety practices when working on energized circuits.
- Reseal the Connector
After torquing, replace the screw plug. Then, fully reseal the connector by installing the attached plug into its port. Ensure all unused cable ports are sealed to maintain integrity.
