Overview

The ABB RAB 1/0-5 is a high-strength, high-conductivity aluminum Flood-Seal multi-port connector engineered for reliable electrical connections in secondary underground distribution systems. Part of the RAB 1/0 Series, this connector accommodates conductor sizes from #14 AWG to 1/0 AWG, supporting both copper and aluminum cables. Its 6061-T6 aluminum alloy bar construction ensures durability and high conductivity, while the Santoprene-coated TPE compound insulation provides robust environmental protection. The Flood-Seal design prevents moisture and contaminant ingress, making it ideal for URD direct burial, below-grade boxes, above-grade pedestals, and street light taps. With a voltage rating of 600V and a temperature range from -40°F to 194°F (-40°C to 90°C), the RAB 1/0-5 delivers consistent performance in harsh conditions. Each unit includes all necessary caps and screws for installation, and unused ports must be sealed to maintain integrity. The connector is 4.60" x 2.90" (117 mm x 74 mm) and has been 100% hi-pot tested at 4000V for 60 seconds to ensure safety and reliability. RUS accepted and ANSI C119.1 compliant, this connector is a trusted solution for critical infrastructure applications.

How to Install the Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series connector. It covers preparing the connector cap, stripping and inserting the cable, and torquing the connection. Always follow standard safety practices, wear appropriate insulating gloves, and ensure circuits are not under load when working on energized mains. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable codes.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, Wire strippers, Insulating gloves, Cutting tool

Supplies needed:

Multi-Seal® RAB 1/0 Series Connector, Electrical cable

  1. Prepare the Connector Cap (if required)

Before starting, ensure you are wearing insulating gloves rated to the appropriate voltage if working on live conductors. If installing #14 to #4 AWG cable, remove the cap from the connector. Cut the cap at the correct cut-off ring for the cable size. Reinsert the cap onto the connector. The cap is not required for #2 to 1/0 AWG cable.

  2. Remove the Screw Plug

Remove the screw plug from the connector. Set it aside in a safe place as it will be reinserted later.

  3. Prepare the Cable for Insertion

Measure the required strip length by placing the cable alongside the markings on the bottom of the connector. Using wire strippers, strip the cable to the measured length, ensuring a clean and precise cut.

  4. Insert the Cable into the Connector

Carefully insert the prepared cable into the connector. For #2 to 1/0 AWG cable, insert it into the tower. For #14 to #4 AWG cable, insert it into the prepared cap. Push the cable firmly until it is fully seated and inserted.

  5. Replace the Screw Plug

Replace the screw plug into the connector, ensuring it is properly aligned and seated before proceeding to torque.

  6. Torque the Connector to Specification

Using a calibrated torque wrench, tighten the connector to 80 in/lbs. This ensures a secure and reliable electrical connection. Verify the connection is firm and meets all installation standards.

  7. Seal Unused Cable Ports

After completing the cable installation and torquing, ensure all unused cable ports on the connector are properly sealed. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity and environmental protection of the connection.
