How to Install the R2T28M4 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables

This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the R2T28M4 28kV Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and final termination placement. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized and installation is performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Utility knife, Cleaning cloths/pads, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer, if needed)

Supplies needed:

R2T28M4 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit (includes: Termination, Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves), Terminal lug or connector, Vinyl tape, Approved solvent

  1. Prepare the Cable

Check that the cable size fits within the termination's insulation range. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length, allowing for terminal lug depth and growth allowance for aluminum lugs. Prevent the tape shield from unrolling by securing its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.

  2. Install the Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch and cutting flush. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield, trim excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, cinching it after the final winding and securing with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install the Terminal Lug or Connector

Verify that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If not, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, avoiding crimping the last 3/8” to 1/2” of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring the solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.

  5. Install the Termination Body and Complete Seals

Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and lug/connector by wrapping a band of gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoid skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal with the remaining silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1” and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel. Finally, connect the ground braid to system ground and confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5”.
