How to Install the R2T15/28J Ranger 2 Cable Termination
This guide provides detailed instructions for the installation of 15kV and 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Terminations on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, cleaning, and the careful application of the termination body and seals. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable strippers, Crimping tool, Knife or utility blade, Clean cloths (for solvent application), Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Multimeter (for verifying de-energized state)
Supplies needed:
R2T15/28J Ranger 2 Cable Termination kit (including silicone rubber termination, lubricant, grey silicone rubber tape, sealing mastic, gloves), Connector or terminal lug (compatible with cable and termination), Approved solvent, Vinyl tape or binding wire
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Verify the cable size is within the kit's specified range. Train the cable into its final position and cut to the required length, ensuring sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable by stripping the jacket, semi-con, and insulation according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 and accounting for terminal lug depth and conductor growth during crimping. Apply the first band of sealing mastic 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end with 50% stretch, cutting it flush without overlap. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, again with 50% stretch and cut flush. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install the Terminal Lug or Connector
If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, clean the cable insulation and slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the chosen connector or terminal lug onto the prepared conductor and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings to ensure a smooth surface.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Thoroughly wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield. Be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed specifications.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of grey silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, use no more than two layers. If the barrel diameter is smaller, build up the tape to match the insulation diameter. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-con insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its forward edge with the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body (not the core) remains butted against the leading edge of the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but avoid lubricating the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining grey silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them securely to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
