How to Install the R2T28M4 Ranger 2 Silicone Rubber Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T28M4 Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape-shielded high voltage cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination application. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before starting.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable preparation tools (e.g., wire strippers, utility knife), Crimping tool (for lugs/connectors), Measuring tape or ruler, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, 120 grit or finer, if needed)

Supplies needed:

R2T28M4-N0410 Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Vinyl electrical tape, Compatible cable connector/lug, Approved solvent

  1. Prepare Cable for Termination

De-energize all apparatus. Verify cable size fits the termination kit. Train the cable into position and cut to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the specified dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth. Secure the tape shield edge with the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.

  2. Install Ground Braid and Mastic Seal

Wrap one band of mastic 1/4 inch (6mm) from the cable jacket end, using 50% stretch, and cut flush. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension, and cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield once, trim excess, and secure it with the constant force spring, wrapping in the same direction. Cinch the spring and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Attach Terminal Lug or Connector

Before crimping, ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If it does not, slide the termination onto the cable first (do not remove the core). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's instructions, leaving the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges after crimping.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, being careful not to let the solvent touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-conductive shield. Do not reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowed range.

  5. Install the Termination Body and Moisture Seal

Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using the gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Wrap a band around the base of the terminal lug; use up to 2 layers if the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, or build up to the insulation diameter if smaller. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body (not the core) is butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination assembly during core removal.

  6. Complete Sealing and Ground Connection

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
