How to Install the R2T15M2-N0280 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on Tape Shielded Cables
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the R2T15M2-N0280 15kV Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, and termination application.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutter, Crimping tool, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
Supplies needed:
R2T15M2-N0280 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit, Lubricant, Gray silicone rubber electrical tape, Constant force spring, Preformed ground braid, Sealing mastic, Copper foil tape, Gloves, Terminal lug or connector, Oxide inhibitor, Vinyl tape, Scotch® No. 13 semi-conductive rubber tape (for cloth/paper semi-con shields)
- Prepare Cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 for 'Jacket Removal Length' (Dimension A) and allow for terminal lug depth plus aluminum lug growth allowance (1/4" to 3/4" depending on Kcmil). Secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling.
- Install Ground Braid
Using 50% stretch, carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end. Position it carefully as it also serves as a termination marker. Cut the mastic flush without overlapping. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block and previously applied mastic, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension, and cut flush. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess, and secure with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it after the final winding, and secure with two wraps of vinyl tape. For cloth or paper semi-con insulation shields, overwrap the shield with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.
- Install Lug or Connector
Ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If it does not, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug; do not remove the core at this time. Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions. Do not crimp the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector. Remove excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent. Do not allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If an abrasive is necessary, use it only on the insulation (not the semi-con shield). Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's allowance.
- Install Termination
Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping a band of the supplied gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. If the barrel diameter is equal to or greater than the cable primary insulation, do not exceed 2 layers. If smaller, use the tape to build up the band to the insulation diameter. Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step at the semi-con cut off. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully begin to remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue removing the core without pushing or pulling on the termination assembly. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (do not lubricate the skirt tabs). Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
