Overview

The ABB Ranger2 Outdoor 15kV Termination (SKU R2T15M1T0220) is a medium-voltage cable termination engineered for reliable performance in outdoor electrical infrastructure. This termination leverages shrink-fit technology and Elastimold’s pull-down jacket seal to deliver a field-proven solution for 15kV applications. It supports a broad insulation range from 0.64 inches (16 mm) to 1.12 inches (28 mm), accommodating tape shield, wire shield, and unshielded cable configurations. The universal aluminum barrel connector ensures compatibility with both aluminum (AL) and copper (CU) conductors, while the integrated copper wire lead is sized for conductor codes 220, supporting stranded/compressed #2 or compact/solid #1 conductors. The termination features a non-tracking silicone housing with superior memory and weathering characteristics, providing long-term service in harsh environmental conditions. Its four-shed design maximizes creepage and strike distances, ensuring reliable operation under high-voltage stress. The field-removable center core simplifies installation, and the pull-down tabs enable easy jacket sealing. With a maximum design voltage to ground of 9.5 kV and a lightning impulse withstand rating of 110 kV crest, this termination meets the demands of medium-voltage distribution systems in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. The compact design allows installation in restricted spaces, including free-hanging configurations, making it a versatile choice for medium-voltage cable terminations.

How to Install the R2T15/28M Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 15kV & 28kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination placement.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Solvent applicator, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, grit 120 or finer)

Supplies needed:

R2T15/28M Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Silicone Lubricant, Gray Silicone Rubber Electrical Tape, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Vinyl Tape, Terminal lug or connector, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional)

  1. Prepare Cable and Install Ground Braid

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Check cable size compatibility and cut to length. Prepare cable dimensions according to Table 1, allowing for terminal lug growth. Secure the tape shield edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape. Apply the first mastic band 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end with 50% stretch. Position the preformed ground braid with the solder block centered over the mastic and secure it with vinyl tape. Press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension. Wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield, trim excess, and secure with the constant force spring. Cinch the spring and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  2. Install Terminal Lug and Clean Cable Insulation

Check that the termination assembly fits over the selected lug; if not, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug, but do not remove the core. Position the connector/lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 3/8" to 1/2" uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings. Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, ensuring it does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If using an abrasive, apply only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) to the insulation, being careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter.

  3. Install the Silicone Rubber Termination

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber electrical tape around the base of the terminal lug. Cover the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease. For lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding counter-clockwise, ensuring the termination body, not the core, is butted against the mastic seal. Do not push or pull the termination during core removal. Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area (avoiding skirt tabs), then carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal with the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
