Overview

The ABB Ranger2 Termination, SKU R2T15M2-N0280-B2, is a 15kV outdoor cable termination system designed for reliable performance in utility and industrial applications. This termination leverages shrink-fit technology and Elastimold’s pull-down jacket seal feature to deliver a robust solution for outdoor environments. The system accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.84 to 1.38 inches, covering a wide range of cable types including Tape Shield, Wire Shield, and UniShield constructions. The included aluminum 2-hole spade connector supports conductor sizes from #2 AWG up to 1250 kcmil, including Standard or Compressed 250 kcmil, and Compact or Solid 300 kcmil options. A stainless steel mounting bracket (1.10–1.50 inch range) ensures secure installation on poles, structures, or enclosures. The non-tracking silicone housing provides superior weathering resistance and long-term service life, with optional insulating silicone sleeves available for enhanced creepage or wildlife protection. The field-removable center core simplifies installation, while the four-shed design maximizes creepage and strike distances for outdoor-rated performance. Rated for 15kV applications, the termination meets critical electrical withstand requirements, including a 110kV BIL (dry), 45kV (10 sec wet), and 50kV (1 min dry). Ideal for utility substations, industrial power distribution, and outdoor switchgear, the Ranger2 series minimizes inventory complexity with three sizes covering the full cable range. Its compact design allows installation in restricted spaces or free-hanging configurations, reducing labor and material costs.

How to Install the R2T15M2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cables

A step-by-step guide for the safe and correct installation of the R2T15M2 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, lug connection, cleaning, and final termination sealing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Approved solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer)

Supplies needed:

Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Gray silicone rubber electrical tape, Constant Force Spring, Preformed Ground Braid, Sealing Mastic, Copper Foil Tape, Gloves, Vinyl tape, Terminal lug or connector, Cable Support Bracket (optional)

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: De-energize all apparatus in the work area before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all kit contents for completeness, damage, rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating parts. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Check that the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-con, and insulation according to the dimensions provided in Table 1 and Figure 1, allowing for terminal lug depth and aluminum lug growth allowance. To prevent the tape shield from unrolling, hold down its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape.

  3. Install the Ground Braid

Carefully wrap one band of mastic around the cable jacket 1/4" (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the mastic strip. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape and press the solder block into the mastic. Apply a second mastic band over the solder block, maintaining the 1/4" (6mm) dimension, and wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Wrap the spring in the same direction as the ground braid, cinch it after the final winding, and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If using cloth or paper semi-con insulation shield, overwrap it with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape (e.g., Scotch® No. 13).

  4. Install the Lug or Connector

Check to ensure the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer’s directions, ensuring not to crimp the last 3/8" to 1/2" of the connector. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings and edges after crimping.

  5. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to allow the solvent to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If abrasive must be used, apply it only to the insulation (not the semi-con shield), use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer), and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below that allowed by the kit.

  6. Install the Termination Body

IMPORTANT: Create a track-resistant moisture seal between the termination insulator and the lug/connector using the supplied gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Wrap a band of silicone tape around the base of the terminal lug (1-2 layers, or build up to insulation diameter if the barrel is smaller). Cover the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with a liberal coating of silicone grease to fill the step. On lower terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until the core is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, align it with the forward edge of the mastic seal, and carefully begin to remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body, not the core, is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal. Continue to remove the core without pushing or pulling on the termination assembly.

  7. Complete Sealing and Grounding

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, but do not lubricate the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. With the termination installed, complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber electrical tape. Overlap the termination insulator by approximately 1" and extend the tape wrapping over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Connect the ground braid to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5".
