How to Install the R2T28J2 Cable Termination
This guide provides detailed instructions for safely installing the R2T28J2 28kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination on concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables, covering cable preparation, lug installation, and final sealing.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Cable strippers, Crimping tool, Approved solvent applicator, Vinyl tape, Binding wire, Aluminum oxide abrasive (optional, grit 120 or finer)
Supplies needed:
R2T28J2 Termination Kit (Silicone Rubber Termination, Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Gloves), Connector/Lug, Approved solvent, Cable (concentric or jacketed concentric neutral), Grounding materials
- De-energize and Prepare Cable for Termination
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious injury. Verify the cable size fits the R2T28J2 kit range (0.84-1.38 inches over insulation, 1.72 inches max over jacket). Train the cable into position, cut to the required length, and allow sufficient neutral wire length for grounding. Prepare the cable according to the dimensions in Table 1, allowing 10.5 inches (270mm) for Dimension A, and additional conductor distance for lug crimping.
- Apply Mastic and Secure Neutral Wires
Carefully wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket, 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, using 50% stretch. Position it precisely as it marks the terminator's position; cut flush without overlap. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and press them in, then secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, cutting it flush. Finally, wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape around the mastic seal, maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension.
- Install Lug/Connector and Clean Cable Insulation
If your lug will not fit through the termination core, slide the termination body onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position and crimp the connector or lug according to its directions, ensuring the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch remains uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings. Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, taking care not to touch the semi-con insulation shield. If necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, avoiding the semi-con shield and not reducing the cable insulation diameter.
- Install the Termination Body
Create a track-resistant moisture seal at the base of the terminal lug using gray silicone rubber tape. Apply 1-2 layers, or build up the tape band to match the insulation diameter if the lug barrel is smaller. Liberally coat the edge of the semi-con insulation shield with silicone grease to fill the step. Pull the loose end of the removable core through the top of the termination until it is flush with the bottom. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the leading edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise from the loose end, ensuring the termination body remains butted against the mastic seal without pushing or pulling.
- Complete Sealing and Grounding
Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration. Twist the concentric neutral wires together and securely connect them to the system ground. Finally, confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
