How to Install the R2T15J2 Cable Termination

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the R2T15J2 15kV Ranger 2 Cable Termination for concentric and jacketed concentric neutral cables in indoor/outdoor applications. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation, and only competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment should perform this procedure.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Approved solvent, Vinyl tape, Gloves, Abrasive (aluminum oxide, 120 grit or finer, optional)

Supplies needed:

R2T15J2 Silicone Rubber Termination, Silicone Lubricant, Grey Silicone Rubber Tape, Sealing Mastic, Connector/Lug, Cable Support Bracket (optional), Binding wire (optional)

  1. Initial Safety and Preparation

De-energize all apparatus, inspect kit contents and components for damage and compatibility, and gather all required tools and supplies. Ensure only competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment perform this installation.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Check cable size against the kit range. Train and cut the cable to the required length, allowing sufficient neutral wire for grounding. Prepare the cable by removing the jacket, semi-conductor shield, and insulation to the specified dimensions, accounting for lug barrel depth.

  3. Apply Mastic and Secure Neutrals

Wrap one band of sealing mastic around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end, stretching 50%. Bend the neutral wires back over the mastic and secure them to the cable jacket 4-6 inches (100-150mm) from the cut edge using vinyl tape or binding wire. Apply a second mastic band over the neutral wires and the first mastic, then wrap two half-lapped layers of vinyl tape over the mastic seal.

  4. Install the Lug or Connector

If using a lug that does not fit through the termination core, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug. Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to its directions, leaving the last 1/4 to 3/8 inch uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and sharp crimp flashings.

  5. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug

Wipe the cable insulation with an approved solvent, being careful not to touch the semi-conductor insulation shield. If necessary, use aluminum oxide abrasive (120 grit or finer) on the insulation only, ensuring not to reduce the cable insulation diameter.

  6. Prepare Termination for Installation

Create a track-resistant moisture seal by wrapping gray silicone rubber tape around the base of the terminal lug. Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductor insulation shield to fill the step. For terminations with a fold-down skirt, pull the loose end of the removable core through the top until it is flush with the bottom of the termination.

  7. Install the Termination Body

Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning it with the forward edge of the mastic seal. Carefully remove the core by unwinding it counter-clockwise, starting with the loose end. Ensure the termination body is butted up to the leading edge of the mastic seal and avoid pushing or pulling the termination assembly during core removal.

  8. Complete Skirt and Moisture Seal

Apply a thin film of silicone lubricant to the skirt and mastic seal area, avoiding the skirt tabs. Carefully fold down the skirt over the mastic seal. Complete the lug area moisture seal using the remaining gray silicone rubber tape, overlapping the termination insulator by approximately 1 inch and extending over a non-crimped region of the lug/connector barrel with a half-lap configuration.

  9. Ground Neutral Wires and Final Check

Twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to the system ground. Confirm that the High-K step does not exceed 1.5 inches.
