How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for Tape Shielded Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the indoor installation of the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination on tape shielded cables, including cable preparation, ground braid installation, and termination placement. This kit does not restore a moisture-resistant seal.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Solvent, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed)
Supplies needed:
15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination kit (includes termination, ground braid, constant force spring, lubricant, copper foil tape, gloves), Vinyl tape, Terminal lug or connector, Oxide inhibitor
- Verify Cable Compatibility and De-energize System
Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Prepare Cable End
Train the cable into position and cut it to the required length. Remove the cable jacket to 9-1/4" (235mm). Remove the tape shield to 3/4" (19mm) from the semi-conductive insulation shield. Secure the edge of the tape shield with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape to prevent unrolling. Allow for the depth of the terminal lug plus any growth allowance for aluminum lugs.
- Install Ground Braid
Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4” (6mm) from the jacket end to serve as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with the short tail over the tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the first marker and the ground braid solder block, maintaining the 1/4” (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable tape shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Secure the constant force spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.
- Install Lug or Connector
Check that the termination assembly fits over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions, leaving the last 3/8” to 1/2” uncrimped. Remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges after crimping.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring solvent does not touch the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation only. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter.
- Install Termination Body
Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination position and continue removing the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly during core removal.
- Connect Ground Braid
Connect the ground braid to the system ground.
