How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Indoor Silicone Rubber Termination
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination for indoor applications, covering cable preparation, ground braid installation, and final termination placement.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable knife, Wire strippers, Measuring tape, Crimping tool, Solvent applicator, Abrasive applicator (if needed)
Supplies needed:
15kV Ranger 2 Shrink Fit Silicone Rubber Termination Kit, Vinyl tape, Copper foil tape (for tape shield cables), Cable connector/lug, Oxide inhibitor, Cleaning solvent, Cleaning pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer, if needed), Semi-conductive rubber tape (if cloth or paper semi-con insulation shield)
- Review Safety and Prepare for Installation
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Read the entire installation instructions before starting. Inspect all kit components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Gather all required tools and supplies, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable
Verify the cable size fits within the insulation range specified in the Termination Selection Chart. Train the cable into its final position and cut it to the required length, allowing for the terminal lug depth and any growth allowance for aluminum lugs. Remove the cable jacket for 9-1/4 inches (235mm). For tape shield cables, prevent the tape shield from unrolling by holding down its edge with a single wrap of the supplied copper foil tape. For wire shield cables, bend the exposed shield wires back upon themselves to the jacket edge, leaving 1 inch (25mm) exposed. For UniShield® cables, follow specific instructions for shield wire and semi-conductive jacket removal.
- Install the Ground Braid
Wrap one band of vinyl tape around the cable jacket 1/4 inch (6mm) from the jacket end; this serves as a marker. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the cable shield (tape shield, wire shield, or UniShield® wires) and center the solder block over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket using vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and ground braid solder block, carefully maintaining the 1/4 inch (6mm) dimension. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield for one complete wrap, trim any excess to prevent overlap, and secure it in place with the constant force spring, wrapping the spring in the same direction as the ground braid. Cinch the spring after the final winding and secure it with two wraps of vinyl tape. If working with cloth or paper semi-conductive insulation shields, overwrap the shield with one half-lapped layer of highly stretched semi-conductive rubber tape.
- Install the Lug or Connector
Before proceeding, check that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If the lug will not fit through the termination core, clean the insulation and slide the termination onto the cable *before* installing the lug (do not remove the core at this time). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 3/8 inch to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.
- Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel
Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with solvent-saturated pads. Exercise caution to prevent the solvent from touching the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use it only on the insulation and not on the semi-conductive insulation shield. Use only aluminum oxide abrasive, grit 120 or finer, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's specified allowance.
- Install the Termination Body
Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield; this silicone will fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, aligning its edge (or skirt for wire shield/Unishield) with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Carefully begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Continuously recheck the termination's position as you remove the core. Do not push or pull on the termination assembly while removing the core.
- Connect Ground Braid
Connect the installed ground braid securely to the system ground.
