How to Install the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2IT15M)

Complete installation guide for the 15kV Ranger 2 Shrink-fit Silicone Rubber Termination (R2IT15M) for indoor applications. This guide details cable preparation, grounding, lug installation, cleaning, and final termination steps.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Cable knife/Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Silicone Rubber Termination, Preformed Ground Braid, Constant Force Spring, Silicone Lubricant, Copper Foil Tape, Vinyl tape, Solvent saturated pads, Aluminum oxide abrasive, Terminal lug/Connector, Gloves

  1. Prepare the Cable

WARNING: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized and verified before beginning installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety. Inspect all kit components for damage and compatibility. Prepare the cable by cutting it to the required length and stripping the jacket, semi-con, and insulation according to the provided dimensions, allowing for terminal lug depth and growth allowance. For tape shield cables, secure the tape shield with copper foil tape.

  2. Install Ground Braid

Wrap one band of vinyl tape 1/4 inch (6mm) from the cable jacket end. Position the preformed ground braid with its short tail over the shield wires/tape shield and the solder block centered over the vinyl tape marker. Secure the ground braid to the cable jacket with vinyl tape. Apply a second vinyl tape band directly over the original marker and solder block. Wrap the ground braid around the cable shield one complete wrap, trim any excess, and secure it in place with the constant force spring. Secure the spring with two wraps of vinyl tape.

  3. Install Terminal Lug or Connector

Verify that the termination assembly will fit over the selected lug. If not, slide the termination onto the cable before installing the lug (do not remove the core yet). Position the connector or lug and crimp it according to the manufacturer's directions. Do not crimp the last 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the connector. After crimping, remove any excess oxide inhibitor and all sharp crimp flashings or edges.

  4. Clean Cable Insulation and Lug Barrel

Wipe the cable insulation thoroughly with solvent-saturated pads, ensuring no solvent touches the semi-conductive insulation shield. If abrasive cleaning is necessary, use only aluminum oxide abrasive (grit 120 or finer) on the insulation, and be careful not to reduce the cable insulation diameter below the kit's specified allowance. Do not use abrasive on the semi-conductive insulation shield.

  5. Install Termination Body

Apply a liberal coating of silicone grease (lubricant) to the edge of the semi-conductive insulation shield to fill the step at the semi-con cut-off. Slide the termination body onto the cable, carefully aligning its edge with the forward edge of the vinyl tape marker. Begin to remove the core by pulling counter-clockwise. Recheck the termination's position and continue removing the core. Avoid pushing or pulling on the termination assembly while removing the core. Finally, connect the ground braid to the system ground.
