How to Install Elastimold 655/675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of Elastimold 655/675LR and K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors, including cable preparation and initial connection procedures for high voltage systems.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector (655/675LR or K655/K675LR), Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug (if used), Lubricant (silicone), Threaded stud (if not pre-equipped), Grounding wire (min. No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material (for cable jacket), HV insulated caps (if replacing shipping covers)
- Prepare Work Area and Cable
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus during installation. Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack. Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm). Prepare the cable by removing the outer jacket (if applicable) and semi-con shield to the specified dimensions as per the cable type (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed, Unishield, or lead sheath).
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare Conductor and Crimp Compression Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter, ensuring not to nick the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm). For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Crimp the compression lug following the instructions supplied with the lug. Wipe all excess inhibitor from the lug and cable adapter surface. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm).
- Install Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect to Mating Product
DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Do not energize while disconnected. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud (if the mating part is not equipped) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part.
- Connect Opposite End and Ground Cable Shield
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its supplied instructions. Insert one end of a grounding wire (at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ground the cable shield according to the instructions supplied with the grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
If performing a voltage test, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
