How to Install the K656DR/K676DR Deadbreak Insulated Cap with Test Point

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the K656DR/K676DR Deadbreak Insulated Cap, including grounding, cleaning, and securing the cap onto a deadbreak bushing interface.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Second Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Insulated Cap, Lubricant, Stud (if applicable), No. 8 Copper Grounding Wire, Grounding wire connector

  1. Prepare and Ground the System

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Connect the free end of the No. 8 copper grounding wire to the system ground using a utility-specified connector. Ensure the grounding wire length is sufficient to reach the insulated cap's grounding eye. If the bushing lacks a stud, hand assemble the supplied stud into the insulated cap; otherwise, discard the supplied stud.

  2. Clean and Lubricate Interfaces

For new installations, thoroughly wipe both the bushing interface and the insulated cap interface to remove all contaminants. Lubricate these surfaces with the supplied lubricant or an Elastimold approved lubricant. For circuits previously energized, clean and lubricate only the interface of the insulated cap.

  3. Install the Insulated Cap

Position the grounding wire loosely around the center of the insulated cap. Attach the first hotstick to the insulated cap's pulling ring and push the cap onto the bushing interface until it goes as far as possible. Using a second hotstick, engage the grounding wire and apply slight tension. While pushing against the bushing interface with the first hotstick, twist the cap clockwise until the threads engage. Continue turning without pushing until resistance is felt. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
