How to Install the K655BE Deadbreak Bushing Extension

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the K655BE 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Bushing Extension, including cleaning, lubrication, torquing, and grounding procedures. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench, 600-AT, Suitable tool (for 600-AT hex), 600ATM, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

K655BE Deadbreak Bushing Extension, Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Double-ended stud (supplied), Appropriate mating component (e.g., connecting plug, deadend plug, reducing tap plug, tap well, or elbow tap plug), #14 AWG copper wire, Suitable ground connector, Protective cap (if applicable), Compression lug (if installing rubber connecting plugs), Insulating plug (for torquing rubber connecting plugs)

  1. Prepare the Bushing Extension

Remove protective caps from the bushing extension. Clean the entire bushing extension interface as noted in the diagram. Lubricate the interface with the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Keep mating surfaces clean. Safety Note: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting.

  2. Prepare and Connect the Mating Product

Clean the entire interface of the connecting plug, deadend plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug. Lubricate the interface with the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Finger tighten the double-ended stud (supplied with the bushing extension) into one of these mating products. Insert this assembled product into the bushing extension. While pushing the assembly onto the bushing, engage the threads and hand-tighten.

  3. Torque Insulating Plugs

If installing Insulating Plugs (K)650BIP, (K)675BIP, 750BIP, or 775BIP, use a torque wrench and tighten the assembly to 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque.

  4. Torque Epoxy Connecting Plugs, Reducing Tap Plugs, or Tap Wells

If installing Epoxy Connecting Plugs (K)650CP, (K)675CP, Reducing Tap Plugs (K)650RTP, (K)675RTP, or Tap Wells (K)650RTW, (K)675RTW, use a torque wrench with an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench and tighten to 40 to 48 foot-pounds of torque.

  5. Torque Retainer Sleeve/Pin Contact

If installing a Retainer Sleeve/Pin Contact, use a 600-AT and a suitable tool attached to the hex. Torque the assembly to 50 to 60 foot-pounds.

  6. Torque Elbow Tap Plug

If installing an Elbow Tap Plug 750ETP, use a torque wrench with 600ATM and tighten the assembly, exerting 50 to 60 foot-pounds of torque.

  7. Torque Rubber Connecting Plugs

If installing Rubber Connecting Plugs 750CP or 775CP, first assemble the components as shown in the product diagram and hand-tighten the rubber connecting plug. Temporarily install and hand-tighten a compression lug and an insulating plug to provide a means of torquing. Use a torque wrench on the insulating plug nut and tighten to 50 to 60 foot-pounds. To prevent the connecting plug from loosening when removing the insulating plug, hold the compression lug and break the torque at the insulating plug. Remove the compression lug and insulating plug.

  8. Complete Mating Component Assembly

Clean the remaining interface of the connecting plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug. Lubricate the interface with the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Assemble the appropriate mating component according to the instructions supplied with that specific product. If an insulating plug was used, assemble the protective cap provided, as per its instructions.

  9. Ground the Bushing Extension

Connect a short length of #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent to the grounding eye of the bushing extension. Make a small loop and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. If mating components assembled in Step 8 require a ground, connect them to ground in this manner.
