Overview

The ABB 755LR-K0250-S is a 35kV 600 Series Deadbreak Elbow designed for medium-voltage cable terminations in power distribution systems. This deadbreak elbow provides a fully shielded, dead-front connection for submersible cable applications, ensuring operator safety and environmental protection. The unit is rated for 35kV phase-to-phase operation with a 600A continuous current rating and 25kA symmetrical momentary withstand for 10 cycles. The molded rubber housing is peroxide-cured EPDM, offering full submersibility and dielectric integrity. The elbow accommodates cable insulation diameters from 1.090 inches to 1.310 inches and supports conductor sizes from 2/0 AWG to 3/0 AWG (compressed stranded) or 70 mm² (compacted solid). The included aluminum compression lug provides reliable termination for both aluminum and copper conductors. A 200ECS Cold-Shrinkable Jacket Seal is provided to ensure a watertight seal around the cable jacket. Installation requires only standard hand tools and can be performed on de-energized systems. How to Install 755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 755LR and 775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for fully shielded, submersible high voltage cable connections on 35kV class systems.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hotstick, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Torque wrench, Suitable capacitive sensing device, Tape marker

Supplies needed:

755/775LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit, High Voltage Cable (compatible with 755/775LR), No. 14 AWG Copper Grounding Wire (or equivalent), Suitable Ground Connector, Cable Jacket Waterproofing Material, Silicone Lubricant, Mating High Voltage Apparatus

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

Before starting, ensure all apparatus in the work area are completely de-energized. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all components of the 755/775LR connector kit for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify that all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Connection

Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24” (610mm). Prepare the cable according to the specific dimensions for your cable type (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed, unishield, lead sheath), removing the outer jacket and semi-con shield as required by the provided diagrams.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Prepare Conductor

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter without nicking the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8” to 4-3/4” (111mm-121mm).

  4. Crimp the Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it must be less than 7” (178mm). Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. After crimping, wipe off any excess inhibitor and verify the distance from the end of the lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8” to 7-5/8” (175mm-194mm).

  5. Install the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Connect to Mating Apparatus

Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating apparatus. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part, keeping surfaces clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug hole with the stud. DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. DO NOT ENERGIZE WHILE DISCONNECTED.

  7. Complete Opposite End Connection (if applicable)

If connecting to another mating part on the opposite end of the elbow, clean and lubricate its surface. Insert the mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. If using an insulating plug, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and push it onto the elbow until it snaps into place.

  8. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper (or equivalent) wire through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is properly grounded, either via a grounding device or an alternate method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  9. Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation)

CAUTION: For 600A L-Kits, tighten each component to the specified torque. To test for voltage, remove the test point cap using a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Use only a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer’s directions. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
