How to Install the K655YDR Deadbreak Insulating Cap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K655YDR Deadbreak Insulating Cap, designed for insulating, shielding, and watersealing 15kV and 25kV class wye splices. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

600RRT assembly tool, Wire strippers, Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

K655YDR Insulating Cap, Bail Bracket, Bail, Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (DO NOT SUBSTITUTE), Hose Clamp (K655YDR-CS2071 only), Grounding wire (minimum #14 copper equivalent)

  1. Lubricate Wye Splice and Insulating Cap

Lubricate the wye splice and the inside of the insulating cap using the supplied lubricant or an Elastimold approved lubricant. Then, insert the nylon venting rod into the insulating cap housing.

  2. Position Insulating Cap and Venting Rod

Slide the insulating cap up to the designated position. Ensure the nylon venting rod (supplied) is inserted. Assemble the cap slowly to allow for proper air venting.

  3. Install Insulating Cap with Assembly Tool

Place the 600RRT assembly tool as shown in the product diagram. Slide the insulating cap over the splice section by turning the hex nut on either end of the tool. Once the cap is in place, remove the vent rod. WARNING: DO NOT PLACE HAND ON THREADED ROD OR GUIDE SHAFT WITH THE ASSEMBLY TOOL IN PLACE.

  4. Secure Hose Clamp and Ground the Cap

For K655YDR-CS2071 models only, position the hose clamp between the locator rings on the insulating cap and tighten it until an audible click is heard. Insert one end of a piece of wire, with current carrying capacity at least equal to #14 copper, through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the grounding eye. Connect the other end of the wire to ground.

  5. Assemble and Tighten Bail

Place the hold-down bail as shown. Pull the hold-down bail up over the top of the insulating cap so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the locator dimple. Turn the eyebolt clockwise to tighten the insulating cap. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt so that the eyebolt seats securely in the locator. The nut acts as a stop to prevent excessive force on the insulating cap. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not require readjustment when removing and replacing the insulated cap.
