How to Install the K655VS Deadbreak Vault Stretcher
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold K655VS Deadbreak Vault Stretcher, including cable preparation, crimping, and connection to high-voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush, 5/8 inch bolt and nut, Cable stripping tools, Measuring tape, Cleaning supplies
Supplies needed:
Vault Stretcher (K655VS/655VS), Cable Adapters (2), Compression Lugs (2), Insulating Plugs (2), Lubricant, Stud Prepack (includes special stud 650VSA), Concentric neutral wire (at least No. 14 AWG copper, if applicable), Suitable ground connectors, Mating parts (e.g., apparatus bushing, connecting plug)
- Safety First: De-energize Apparatus
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus in the work area are completely de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products.
- Inspect Components and Gather Tools
Inspect the vault stretcher, cable adapters, compression lugs, and other supplied parts for any damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Gather all required tools, including a crimping tool, wire brush (for aluminum), 5/8 inch bolt and nut, cable stripping tools, and measuring tape. Maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare Concentric Neutral Cable (If Applicable)
For concentric neutral cable, overlap both cables and cut them to 14 inches (355mm) from the centerline of the joint. Carefully bend back the concentric neutral wires.
- Clean and Prepare Cable Ends
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back neutrals. Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable insulation, semi-con shield, and shield wires to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-3/4 inches, 10-3/4 inches, 12-3/4 inches tape markers as per Step 3C in the full instructions).
- Bevel Cable Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Verify Conductor Length
Remove any cable insulation protruding beyond the cable adapter, cutting it even with the adapter's end without nicking the adapter or conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-3/8 inches and 4-11/16 inches (111mm-119mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Insert Conductor into Compression Lug and Prepare for Crimping
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the “Check Dimension” (should be less than 6-1/2 inches). Align the flat portions of the compression connector using a 5/8-inch bolt as a temporary locater. Make the first crimp 3-1/2 inches from the open end of the compression fitting at the indicated mark.
- Complete Crimping and Inspect Lug
Rotate each successive crimp 180 degrees to prevent bowing. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the connector and the cable insulation. Verify that the connector end measures between 6-1/2 inches and 7-1/4 inches (165mm-184mm). Remove any sharp flash from the crimp before proceeding.
- Install Vault Stretcher Body onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the inside of the vault stretcher body and the outside of the cable adapter. Using a rotating motion, slip the vault stretcher body onto the cable adapter. Ensure the compression lug is aligned and seats properly with the inside mating portion of the vault stretcher, pushing it until it cannot advance further. Confirm the base of the adapter is aligned with the marking tape. Repeat for the second cable, pushing the vault stretcher and compression lug sideways until the lug enters the open end.
- Align and Seat Vault Stretcher
Slowly push both units toward their final alignment, ensuring the lubricated adapter slides into proper position within the vault stretcher. Check the location of the compression lug through the viewing hole. Once the compression lug is fully seated, verify that both cable adapters are still flush with their respective tape markers. Reposition if necessary, then remove the tape markers.
- Connect Mating Parts
Remove protective caps from the vault stretcher and the mating part. Hand tighten the special conversion stud (650VSA), supplied with the vault stretcher, into one mating part. Clean and lubricate both the vault stretcher and the mating part. Repeat the cleaning and lubricating process for the mating part on the opposite end. Insert the mating part, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.
- Install Insulating Plug (If Applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps securely into place.
- Ground Concentric Neutral Cable
Insert one end of a wire, with an ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG copper, through each grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Exercise care to avoid damaging the grounding eyes. Connect these wires to a suitable ground using appropriate connectors.
