How to Install and Operate the ELASTIMOLD 273/375DRG(3) Insulated Cap

This guide provides instructions for the safe installation, operation, and removal of the ELASTIMOLD 273/375DRG(3) insulated cap, designed for insulating, shielding, and watersealing 25kV and 35kV class loadbreak bushing interfaces.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Full insulated hotstick (minimum 8 ft recommended)

Supplies needed:

ELASTIMOLD 273/375DRG(3) Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ground the System

Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the insulated cap and mating parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire from the insulated cap to the system ground, leaving enough slack for hot-stick operation. CAUTION: Train the grounding wire to prevent contact with the bushing interface during operation.

  2. Prepare the Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap's internal mating surface using only the supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Replace the protective cover if the cap is not immediately used.

  3. Install the Insulated Cap onto the Bushing

Firmly attach a full insulated hotstick (minimum 8 ft recommended) to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Carefully insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, and straight motion until it is fully mated and the locking ring is seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.

  4. Remove the Insulated Cap

To remove the cap, first attach a hotstick to the pulling eye. Before pulling, rotate the insulated cap slightly while it is still in the mated position to break any surface friction. Pull the receptacle off with a fast, firm, straight motion. Remove the electrostatic grounding wire from the system ground. Replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
