How to Install and Remove the ELASTIMOLD Insulated Cap with Ground Lead (273/375DRG(3))

This guide provides instructions for the safe installation and removal of the ELASTIMOLD 273DRG(3) and 375DRG insulated caps, which insulate, shield, and waterseal loadbreak bushing interfaces. DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal, except for test point caps and indicators.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Insulated Cap with Ground Lead, Lubricant

  1. Connect Electrostatic Grounding Wire

Connect the free end of the electrostatic grounding wire to the system ground, ensuring enough slack for hot-stick operation of the insulated cap. CAUTION: Train the grounding wire to avoid contact with the bushing interface during operation.

  2. Prepare Insulated Cap

Remove the protective cover from the insulated cap. Lubricate the cap's internal mating surface using only the supplied lubricant or ELASTIMOLD approved lubricants. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the internal mating surface free from dirt and grime. Always replace the protective cover when not in use.

  3. Install Insulated Cap onto Bushing

Firmly attach a hotstick (minimum 8 ft recommended) to the insulated cap's pulling eye. Insert the male contact of the insulated cap into the loadbreak bushing. Push the cap home with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring it is fully mated with the locking ring seated. Detach the hotstick from the insulated cap.

  4. Remove Insulated Cap

To remove the cap, attach a hotstick to the pulling eye. Before pulling, rotate the insulated cap slightly while in the mated position to break surface friction. Pull the receptacle off with a fast, firm, straight motion. Remove the electrostatic grounding wire of the insulated cap from the system ground. Replace the protective cover on the insulated cap to keep its internal surface clean.
