Overview

The ABB K655DLR-J0330 is a 15/25kV, 600 Amp deadbreak direct test elbow designed for medium voltage power distribution systems. This fully rated elbow connector incorporates ABB's Direct Test System (EDTS), featuring an insulated port for safe voltage testing, isolation, and grounding without cable disconnection. The molded rubber housing is fully shielded and submersible, constructed from 100% peroxide-cured EPDM materials for long-term reliability in harsh environments. Voltage ratings support 15kV class (8.3kV phase-to-ground, 14.4kV phase-to-phase) and 25kV class (16.2kV phase-to-ground, 28kV phase-to-phase), with impulse withstand ratings of 95kV BIL (15kV) and 140kV BIL (25kV). The connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.980 to 1.180 inches and supports conductor sizes of 500 kcmil stranded/compressed or 600 kcmil solid/compact, terminated with an aluminum compression lug. Installation is simplified using standard hand tools in a de-energized state, with optional accessories available for visible separation, bypass, isolation, dead-ending, grounding, and fault detection. The direct test point enables efficient voltage verification during maintenance, reducing downtime while maintaining system safety. This elbow is ideal for utility, industrial, and commercial medium voltage applications requiring reliable, maintenance-free connections in underground or aerial installations. The K655DLR-J0330 is part of ABB's 600 Series, engineered for compatibility with standard 600TC series meter adapters and compatible with Elastimold® system components. Its robust construction ensures dependable performance under demanding electrical conditions, making it a practical choice for power system engineers and technicians focused on operational integrity.

How to Install the K655DLR-J0330 Direct Test Elbow Connector

Installation guide for mounting and wiring the K655DLR-J0330 direct test elbow connector. Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Hotstick tool, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, Lubricant, Vinyl plastic tape, Tape retainer, Tape marker, Grounding wire, Suitable connector for ground

  1. Prepare the Cable

Position the cable in its final location with sufficient slack. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the center line of the mating product. Clean the outer surface of the cable for 24” (610mm). Follow specific instructions for removing outer jacket, shield wires, flat metallic tape shield, fabric tape shield, longitudinally corrugated shield, UNISHIELD cable, lead sheath cable, or semi-con shield as applicable to your cable type. Ensure all dimensions are precise and do not nick the cable insulation.

  2. Install the Cable Adapter

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45° angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.

  3. Prepare the Conductor

Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the length of the exposed conductor is between 4-3/8” (111mm) and 4-11/16” (119mm). If not, redo the assembly. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor and immediately fully insert it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-1/2” (165mm). Crimp the compression lug according to its specific instructions. Wipe excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping should be between 6-1/2” to 7-1/4” (165mm – 184mm).

  5. Install the Elbow

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Ensure the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Remove the tape marker.

  6. Connect to Mating Product

WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT OR DISCONNECT MATING PRODUCTS WHILE ENERGIZED. Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud into the mating part if it is not already equipped. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow, insert it into the elbow, engage threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions.

  7. Install Insulating Plug (if applicable)

If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow. Push down firmly until the cap snaps into place.

  8. Ground the Cable Shield

Insert one end of a piece of wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to the instructions provided with the grounding device or an alternate method if no device is used. It is recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
