How to Install the K655CETP-G0230 Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the K655CETP-G0230 Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including detailed cable preparation, compression lug crimping, and secure connection to high voltage apparatus. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

600AT or 600ATM assembly tool, Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush (for aluminum conductor), Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Vinyl plastic tape, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all components for damage, verify ratings, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare Cable for Connection

Position the cable with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4” (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer cable surface for 24” (610mm). Remove the outer jacket and prepare the shield (fold back shield wires, remove metallic tape, or remove semi-con shield) according to your cable type and the specified dimensions. Do not cut or nick the cable insulation.

  3. Install Cable Adapter and Crimp Compression Lug

Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4” (6mm) back. Clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker. Remove protruding cable insulation even with the cable adapter, ensuring the exposed conductor is 4 3/8”–4 11/16” (111mm–119mm). Insert the conductor fully into the compression lug (wire brush aluminum conductors immediately before insertion) and crimp according to the lug's instructions. Wipe off excess inhibitor.

  4. Install Elbow and Connect to Mating Apparatus

Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further, ensuring the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. Remove the tape marker. DANGER: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized. Remove protective caps from the elbow and mating part. Install the stud into the apparatus by hand until fully seated. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part. Push the elbow onto the mating part. Use the appropriate 600AT or 600ATM assembly tool to engage the hex broach and torque the contact assembly to the specified foot-pounds (19-25 ft/lbs for 600AT, 50-60 ft/lbs for 600ATM, do not exceed 60 ft/lbs).

  5. Ground the Connector and Waterproof Cable

Insert one end of a wire (at least No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist to form a small loop. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device, or through an alternate method if no device is used. It is recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.

  6. Verify Seating and Perform Voltage Test (Optional)

Confirm complete assembly by ensuring no portion of the colored interface sleeve is visible when viewed from the side. For 656CETP models, a voltage test point is available. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick (peel off at an angle). WARNING: This is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it.
