How to Install Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, designed for terminating various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Knife or beveling tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Multimeter or voltage tester, Pliers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Optional: Sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2), Optional: Vinyl tape, Optional: Conductive copper tape, Cleaning supplies

  1. Ensure Safety and Inspect Components

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized using appropriate testing equipment. Inspect all components of the 262LR kit for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating bushing. Check the compression lug and probe threads for smooth engagement.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the documentation to prepare the outer jacket and neutral/shield wires. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  3. Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Using a cable cut-back template, remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to its specific instructions, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: Re-confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized before making the final connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
