Overview

The ABB K655BE-K650ETP is a 600 Amp, 15/25kV deadbreak bushing extender designed to increase the distance between apparatus surfaces and 600A elbow connections. This fully shielded, submersible unit features a threaded stud attachment for secure mounting and compatibility with Elastimold® accessories like the K650ETP elbow tap plug. Engineered to meet ANSI/IEEE Standard 386, it supports 15kV (8.3kV phase-to-ground, 14.4kV phase-to-phase) and 25kV (16.2kV phase-to-ground, 28kV phase-to-phase) voltage classes with impulse withstand ratings of 95kV and 140kV BIL respectively. The extender delivers 600A continuous current and 25kA symmetrical momentary ratings (10 cycles), ensuring reliable performance in medium-voltage applications. Its peroxide-cured EPDM housing provides full insulation and conductivity, while the deadbreak design allows safe connection/disconnection in de-energized states using standard hand tools. Ideal for transformer bushings and switchgear, this extender simplifies termination of 15/25kV class elbow connectors.

How to Install the 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Bushing Extension

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation, assembly, and grounding of the 600/900 AMP Deadbreak Bushing Extension. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, Wire strippers, Suitable hex tool, ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench (if applicable), 600-AT (if applicable), 600ATM (if applicable)

Supplies needed:

Lubricant (supplied or ELASTIMOLD approved), Double-ended stud (supplied), #14 AWG copper wire, Suitable ground connector, Compression lug (for rubber plugs), Insulating plug (for rubber plugs)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Check

Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal of any parts. Inspect the bushing extension and all mating components for damage, correct rating, and compatibility. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors if submerging or energizing the circuit. Have all required tools and supplies ready.

  2. Clean and Lubricate Bushing Extension

Remove protective caps from the bushing extension. Clean the entire bushing extension interface thoroughly and lubricate it using the supplied lubricant or an ELASTIMOLD approved lubricant. Maintain cleanliness of all mating surfaces.

  3. Assemble and Hand-Tighten Mating Product

Clean and lubricate the entire interface of your chosen connecting plug, deadend plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug. Finger tighten the supplied double-ended stud into this mating product. Insert the assembled product into the bushing extension, pushing the assembly firmly while engaging the threads, then hand-tighten.

  4. Torque the Main Assembly

Tighten the assembly using a torque wrench. For Insulating Plugs, torque to 50-60 foot-pounds. For Epoxy Connecting Plugs, Reducing Tap Plugs, or Tap Wells, use an ELASTIMOLD 600SW spanner wrench and torque to 40-48 foot-pounds. For Retainer Sleeve/Pin Contact, use 600-AT and torque to 50-60 foot-pounds with a suitable hex tool. For Elbow Tap Plug 750ETP, use 600ATM and torque to 50-60 foot-pounds.

  5. Torque Rubber Connecting Plugs (If Applicable)

If installing a Rubber Connecting Plug (750CP, 775CP), hand-tighten it. Temporarily install and hand-tighten a compression lug and an insulating plug. Use a torque wrench on the insulating plug nut and tighten to 50-60 foot-pounds. To prevent the connecting plug from loosening when removing the insulating plug, hold the compression lug and break the torque at the insulating plug. Remove the temporary compression lug and insulating plug.

  6. Assemble Remaining Mating Components

Clean and lubricate the remaining interface of the connecting plug, reducing tap plug, reducing tap well, or elbow tap plug. Assemble the appropriate mating component according to its specific instructions. If using an insulating plug, assemble its protective cap as per its instructions.

  7. Ground the Bushing Extension and Mating Products

Connect a short length of #14 AWG copper wire or equivalent to the grounding eye of the bushing extension. Form a small loop and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to a suitable ground using an appropriate connector. Any mating components assembled in Step 6 that require grounding should also be connected to ground in the same manner.
