How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 600-ampere and 900-ampere deadbreak elbow connectors on 15kV and 25kV class systems. It covers cable preparation, lug crimping, and connection to mating apparatus. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts to prevent serious or fatal injury.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Torque wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector, Cable adapter, Compression lug, Insulating plug, Lubricant, Threaded stud, Tape marker, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent), Suitable grounding connector, Silicone lubricant
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspection
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, verify ratings, and check compatibility with mating parts. Confirm all package contents are complete and undamaged, and that all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Assemble Cable and Clean Outer Surface
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Thoroughly clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare the Cable
Follow the specific cable preparation steps (A, B, or C) that apply to your cable type. This involves removing the outer jacket (if applicable) and preparing the cable insulation, semi-con shield, and shield wires/tape to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-3/4, 10-3/4, 12-3/4 inches from the cut end) as shown in the documentation diagrams. If using a grounding device or jacket cable seal, refer to their specific installation instructions for jacket removal and shield connection.
- Install the Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Clean and thoroughly lubricate the cable insulation, always working toward the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Prepare the Conductor
Carefully remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Exercise caution to avoid cutting or nicking the cable adapter or the conductor. The length of the exposed conductor must be between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm). If the length is outside this range, redo the assembly.
- Crimp the Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-3/8 inches. Crimp the compression lug according to the instructions supplied with the lug. After crimping, wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter should be between 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm). If any dimension is incorrect, redo the assembly.
- Install the Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter, pushing until it cannot advance further. Verify that the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Once correctly positioned, remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Products
WARNING: Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized, and do not energize while disconnected. Remove any protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the threaded stud (supplied with the elbow) into the mating part. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring all surfaces remain clean.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully aligning the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Ensure a secure and proper connection.
- Connect Opposite End Mating Part
Clean and lubricate the mating part intended for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow. Engage the threads and hand tighten. Torque the mating part to the specifications provided in its own instructions. CAUTION: When constructing 600-amp L-Kits, ensure each component is tightened to its specified torque.
- Install Insulating Plug and Cap (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place the cap onto the elbow and push down firmly until it snaps into place. Proceed to the voltage test directions.
- Ground the Cable Shield
Insert one end of a piece of wire (with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper) through the grounding eye and twist it to form a small loop, being careful not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded. Ground it according to the instructions supplied with any grounding device used. If no grounding device is present, ground the shield through an alternate approved method. It is also recommended to waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
The ELASTIMOLD deadbreak elbow connector has an integral capacitance test point. Use a hotstick to remove the test point cap by peeling it off at an angle, not pulling directly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can give false readings. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
