How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of a 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug. It covers preparing the stud, lubricating components, making the connection, and grounding.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Torque wrench, 3/8 inch hex bit socket, Wire strippers, Cleaning cloth

Supplies needed:

600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug, Lubricant, No. 14 AWG copper wire, Mating plug device, Stud (if needed)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Conduct Safety Checks

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Install the Stud on the Mating Plug Device

If the mating plug device (e.g., elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module) is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Ensure the stud is threaded in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.

  3. Clean and Lubricate Components

Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part as indicated. Lubricate all specified surfaces (connecting plug, stud, and mating part) with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the products. Maintain cleanliness throughout this procedure.

  4. Connect and Torque the Connecting Plug

Push the connecting plug firmly into the elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module, and engage the threads. Hold the contact of the connecting plug against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a torque wrench with a 3/8 inch hex bit socket, tighten the connection to 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.

  5. Ground the Connecting Plug

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect the other end of the wire securely to ground.
