How to Weld ELASTIMOLD Apparatus Bushings and Bushing Wells

This guide provides suggested recommendations for welding ELASTIMOLD apparatus bushings and bushing wells, focusing on minimizing heat to maintain product integrity. It covers welding processes, materials, heat sink usage, and critical installation requirements.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Inert-gas, tungsten-arc (TIG) welding equipment, Short-arc (MIG) welding equipment, Thermocouple detectors, Copper heat sinks, Cleaning supplies (e.g., degreaser), Burr removal tool

Supplies needed:

No. 308 bare stainless steel wire, Thermally conductive paste, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)

  1. Prepare Apparatus and Work Area

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Inspect parts for damage, rating, and compatibility. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors. Thoroughly clean all surfaces (tank, bushing, bushing well) to remove contamination like paint or grease. Prepare the mounting hole by removing all burrs and finishing with a 1/16" radius. Verify the clearance between the epoxy shank and mounting hole is 3/16" 1/16" and the enclosure cover thickness is 1/4" maximum. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Set Up Heat Sinks and Welding Environment

Install copper heat sinks, applying thermally conductive paste at the faces in contact with the flange and cover. Ensure the bottom heat sink has a larger diameter than the top to absorb heat effectively. Provide venting for the heat sinks. DANGER: Do not thread heat sinks to the bushing or bushing well stud, as expansion due to heat may affect the integrity of these parts. Minimize air currents in the welding area to prevent disturbance of the gas atmosphere. During heat sink development, use thermocouple detectors to ensure temperatures at critical points will not exceed 2250F during welding.

  3. Perform Welding

Perform welding using either Inert-gas, tungsten-arc (TIG) or Short-arc (MIG) processes with No. 308 bare stainless steel wire. CAUTION: Keep heat to a minimum; the visible heat line should not be greater than 1/8" from the weld, or 3/16" from the O.D. of the flange. After welding, handle the assembly carefully to minimize forces applied to the heated stud and flange. If using non-water-cooled heat sinks, remove them promptly after welding and air cool the bushing.

  4. Complete Final Checks and Connections

IMPORTANT: No torque is to be applied to the epoxy when making any bus bar connection. Ensure the oil level covering the immersed stud connection is greater than 2 inches. If the equipment requires thermal baking to cure its finish, ensure the bake sequence does not exceed 1300F or 8 hours to prevent damage to critical sealing aspects of the bushings. Additionally, the bushing metallic contacts should not be mechanically loaded internally or externally during this cure process to prevent epoxy distortion.
