How to Install the 600/900 Series Deadbreak Connecting Plug
This guide provides instructions for installing the 600/900 series deadbreak connecting plug, an accessory for power distribution systems. It covers mating the plug with various components and ensuring proper connection, including safety precautions and optional grounding.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, 3/8 inch hex bit socket, 600ATM (alternative to 3/8 inch hex bit socket)
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (for grounding, if applicable)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect the connecting plug and mating parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility. Verify all package contents are complete and undamaged, and that components fit properly. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.
- Install Mating Stud (If Applicable)
If the mating plug device is not equipped with a stud, hand tighten the stud into the mating plug device. Thread the stud in until the start of the flats are below the contact surface.
- Clean and Lubricate Components
Clean both the connecting plug and its mating part thoroughly. Apply the supplied lubricant to both parts as indicated in the diagrams. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE the lubricant, as other lubricants may be harmful to the products. Ensure all surfaces remain clean.
- Connect and Torque Connecting Plug
Push the connecting plug firmly into the elbow, bushing extender, vault stretcher, or elbow end module, ensuring the threads engage. Hold the contact of the connecting plug against the contact surface of the mating part. Using a 600ATM or a 3/8 inch hex bit socket and a torque wrench, tighten the connection to 50 to 60 foot-pounds (68 to 81 newton-meters) of torque.
- Ground the Connecting Plug (If Applicable)
If grounding is required, insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the connecting plug. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Connect the other end of the wire to a suitable ground.
